Let me start off by saying that there were so many amazing vendors at Quebec’s German Christmas Market. From local crafts to handcrafted wines, it was a day I will never forget. But there was one place that stood out more than the others, and that was 1001 Foundes.
The line was long for this stand during the entire day. I personally waited 40 minutes, while others waited hours. It was wrapped around the building!
Yet, with every step toward the front, excitement bubbled up. So, what’s all the fuss about?

What is Fondue?
Before I tell you all about 1001 Fondues, let’s talk about what Fondue is. Fondue is a traditional Swiss dish that involves melting cheese and serving it in a communal pot, usually heated with a candle or a burner.
Diners dip bread cubes, vegetables, or other small food items into the melted cheese using long forks or skewers. The word “fondue” comes from the French word “fondre,” which means “to melt.”

In addition to cheese fondue, there are also other variations to explore. For instance, in chocolate fondue, pieces of fruit, marshmallows, or other treats are dipped into melted chocolate. Alternatively, in oil or broth fondue, small pieces of meat or vegetables are cooked by dipping them into hot oil or broth.
Fondue typically thrives in a social and interactive setting, making it a favored choice for gatherings and special occasions.
The Story of 1001 Fondues
Now that you’re in the fondue know, let’s dive into 1001 Fondues, the star stand at the German Christmas Market. Additionally, they specialize in, you guessed it, delicious fondue! What sets them apart is their dedication to authenticity and simplicity, and you can truly taste it in every mouthwatering bite.
In 1984, 1001 Fondues began as a vision in the mind of founder Jean-Yves Lapointe, a pioneer contemplating the evolution of cheese fondue. Departing from the Swiss winter tradition, he, along with his daughter Caroline, embraced a local perspective, redefining the art of cheese fondue for year-round enjoyment in Quebec.

Over nearly four decades, audacity and innovation have fueled this family business based in Quebec City. Beyond providing a world of conviviality and comfort, 1001 Fondues continues to expand its offerings, introducing lactose and gluten-free fondues crafted with unique blends of artisan cheeses, local microbrewery beer, cider, mead, gin, and even Quebec whisky.
They source all their goodies locally, using Quebec cheeses, beers, wines, and ciders in their delightful range of products. Whether you’re planning a cozy date night, gearing up for a happy hour, or enjoying a bit of fondue magic under the stars while camping, they’ve got the perfect fondue for every occasion.
1001 Fondues
If there’s only one stand you visit at Quebec’s German Christmas Market, make it this one! Let me guide you through the entire experience so you know what to expect.
First things first expect a wait in line—it tends to be long unless you’re an early bird. The idea of indulging in fondue for breakfast might be the perfect solution if you have the chance.
Once you reach the front of the line, a team member will grab a baguette fresh off the warming rack.

Transitioning smoothly to the next step, the team member will generously pour the Fondue inside the baguette, filling it to the brim. But wait, there’s more—finally, they will place a savory sausage directly into the hole in the baguette. To round off the masterpiece, they will add another dollop of fondue on top.

And just like that, your 1001 Fondues treat is complete. Now, all that’s left to do is savor every bite. Doesn’t it look absolutely delicious?

A Culinary Treasure
Guess what? They also sell Fondues that you can whip up at home! But honestly, if given the chance, I’d go right back to this stand for one or four more of these instead!
I’ve mentioned it a few times, but seriously, this is one of the best treats I’ve ever indulged in. The cheese fondue, paired with the warm baguette and savory sausage, was an absolute delight.
