It comes as no surprise that New England is known for its breathtaking fall foliage. In fact, many travel from all over the country between September and November to see the leaves for themselves. I was able to check out some of New England’s best fall foliage spots this past fall. Here is one of my favorites, which is located in Dixville Notch State Park.

Table Rock Trail

The drive alone to the trailhead is worth the trip; the Table Rock Trail is just an added bonus. We went early fall when many of the leaves were still a bit green but starting to turn.

One of the reasons I loved this hike was the journey to the summit. It was a beautiful uphill trek through a packed forest, which means excellent fall foliage. The leaves fell as we hiked, making it a perfect fall day.

The only rough section was the area before the summit. You will go down a rocky path that requires some climbing on the way back. Just go slow and watch for any wet leaves. Other than that, the hike was delightful. It will get your heart racing, but thanks to it’s small mileage its doable for most.

The summit is gorgeous and scary. When you first get up, there is a flat section, which I recommend hanging at if you are scared of hikes.

If you keep going further on the summit, you will have to walk on the small rock path, which has no border on either side. People have gotten injured here, so if you are not confident or are afraid of heights, do not go further. I did not cross over, and as you can see, my view from the summit was so amazing!

How Long Is The Table Rock Trail Hike?

The hike is only 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of 771 feet and takes around 2 hours to complete. It is an out and back trail, which means you head to the summit then turn around and come back the same way you went up. Make sure to pack a lunch to enjoy at the summit before coming back down!

I recommend downloading the trail on All Trails for the map before your hike.

How Much Does It Cost To Visit Dixville Notch State Park?

It is free to visit this state park, thanks to awesome New Hampshire. So you can just park and enjoy the trail.

Where To Park For Table Rock Trail?

As you get close to the Trailhead, look for a dirt parking lot to the left if you are driving North and on the right if you are driving South. There are about 30 parking spots here. During the fall, get here early before the lot fills up.

Where To Stay In The Area?

The Balsams Hotel is an elegant property that is surrounded by mountains. I would recommend staying here if you are making your trip to Table Rock Trail an overnight adventure.

Where Is Table Rock Trail?

The trail is located in Dixville Notch State Park, there is a paved road which makes it easy to get to.

You can also hike the trail in the spring and summer. I would add Table Rock Trail to your hiking bucket list for either season!
