If you are hiking for the first time and have no idea what to pack, that’s okay. It can be overwhelming to plan and know what you need. Whether discussing a relaxing day hike or summiting a mountain, you will want to bring certain items. Here is everything you need to pack for your first hike.

Hiking For The First Time Checklist

1. Hiking Backpack

First, you need to get a hiking backpack. You will want to purchase one that has plenty of compartments and is water resistant.

Backpackers usually use larger bags to fit their tents and overnight items. If you plan an overnight hike, I recommend this Backpacking Backpack.

2. Base Layers

Sometimes, when you start a hike, it may be beautiful and sunny, but the higher you climb, the colder it gets. That is why base layers are so important to have in your hiking backpack.

They provide your body with extra warmth by effectively retaining your body heat. Put them on before adding any other layers.

3. Rain Jacket

Just like baselayer pants, a raincoat is essential for your hiking trip. Hiking weather can be unpredictable, so having a jacket that keeps you dry is crucial. Plus, a raincoat will help keep you warm when exploring windy trails and misty forests.

4. Collapsible Water Bottle

Staying hydrated during your hike is so important. That’s why it’s essential to bring a reusable water bottle. They’re simple to pack and help you stay hydrated during your hiking trip.

5. Hydration Bladder

If you are doing a longer hike, a hydration bladder may be best. I love using these on my 8-10-hour high-altitude hiking days.

Having enough water with you is super important when you’re hiking. As a simple guide, a liter for every hour you’ll be hiking. If you’re new to hiking and going at an average speed, you’ll likely cover about two miles in an hour. So, if you’re planning a four-mile hike, bring at least two big bottles of water or fill this entire hydration pack.

6. Headlamp

There are times when you’ll need a headlamp while hiking. For example, a headlamp will be handy if you’re going on a sunset hike because you’ll be coming back in the dark.

Packaging sun protection is crucial, even if you’re snow hiking in winter. The sun can still be intense, mainly when it reflects off the snow, and you could end up with a sunburn.

9. SPF Lip Balm

10. Compass


It’s easy to get lost outside, especially in new places. Before your first hike, it’s smart to know your route. If you’re not confident navigating trails, choose a well-known hike where you’ll see other hikers. But if you do get lost, a compass can help you get where you need to be.

When hiking, having a small first aid kit is essential. It helps you treat minor injuries like cuts, scrapes, or blisters that might happen on the trail.
