Welcome to your ultimate guide to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in 2024! If you’re ready to experience the magic of hot air balloons, you’ve come to the right place. I have visited the Balloon Fiesta twice but only saw the balloons take off once. Here is everything you need to know about the 2024 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta from someone who actually attended it before, twice.

When Is The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in 2024?

This year, the balloon fiesta will take from October 5 – 13, 2024. It is a two-week event, which allows you a variety of days to watch the events.

What Are The Main Events At The Balloon Fiesta?

There are so many events; you can view the full Balloon Fiesta Schedule here. But here are some of the main events we experienced during your visit.

Dawn Patrol Show

In 1978, at the Balloon Fiesta, two balloonists from California started something called the Dawn Patrol. They made unique lights for their balloons so they could fly at night. The Dawn Patrol pilots fly before sunrise until it gets light enough to see where to land. Other balloonists like it because they can see the balloons and know about the wind.

They inflate and launch their balloons while music plays. This has been happening since 1996. If the weather is good, the inflating starts around 5:45 AM, and they launch around 6:00 AM.

Chainsaw Carving

Chainsaw sculpture is a newer type of art with fans all over. The way the carvers handle those big chainsaws is pretty unique to watch.

The AIBF Chainsaw Carving Exhibition is at the North end of Balloon Fiesta Park. Visitors can even take one of these cool carvings home as a souvenir! Each day of the exhibition, there will be a live auction, and you can buy other carvings every day, too. Seeing this art form in action will be neat, so don’t miss out!

Balloon Glow

The events we now call Balloon Glows started in Albuquerque in 1979. Local pilots inflated balloons on Christmas Eve to thank the people in the area. Seeing balloons glowing like big holiday decorations at night is fantastic; glow events happen worldwide.

The two times we visited the Balloon Glow, it was canceled due to wind. But at least we got to see this breathtaking sunset.

The AfterGlow Fireworks Show

The Balloon Glows, followed by fantastic fireworks, are some of the most loved events at Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. This fireworks display, often accompanied by music, illuminates the night sky over Balloon Fiesta Park, creating a mesmerizing visual experience for attendees.

The AfterGlow Fireworks Show is a beloved tradition and one of the highlights of the Balloon Fiesta, providing a perfect conclusion to a day filled with hot air balloon flights, events, and entertainment.

It was one of the highlights of our trip and will most likely go on when the balloon events are canceled.

Mass Ascension

The most famous event is the Mass Ascension. Since the beginning of the Balloon Fiesta, there has been Mass Ascension. It’s when all the balloons in the fiesta launch together, and it’s the most fantastic thing to see and hear in aviation. During Mass Ascension, the balloons take off in two groups.

If the weather is good, the balloons start taking off around 7:00 AM on Mass Ascension days. The first balloon to go up flies the American flag while “The Star Spangled Banner” plays.

The event lasts for a few hours, and it’s amazing to see hundreds of balloons take off into the air. We were lucky enough to see it during one of our visits, even though it was delayed for a few hours.

When Should I Arrive At Balloon Fiesta Park To View The Mass Ascension?

Since it gets crowded, it would be best to set your spot up for 6:00 AM. We even had to wake up at 4:30 AM to get parking since the line was a few hours long. Do not run late!

What Are The Best Viewing Spots for the Balloon Fiesta?

You will want to set up a spot right on the main field where all of the balloons are located. You can even get close to the balloons, catch them, and blow them up. No areas are roped off; just be respectful of the Balloons.

Can The Mass Ascension Get Cancelled?

The first year we visited, the entire weekend of Mass Ascension was canceled due to the high wings. We were devastated, and everyone who was visiting was annoyed. The following year, we went again, and even though it was canceled on a Saturday, we could see them on Sunday. I would plan your visit for an entire weekend in case the weather is terrible.

What Are The Reasons A Mass Ascension Could Get Canceled?

Weather conditions that can make it dangerous for hot air balloons to take off at the fiesta include high winds, thunderstorms bringing lightning and turbulence, fog reducing visibility, low clouds restricting sight, and poor visibility due to heavy rain or snow.

Strong gusts of wind can make it challenging to control balloons, while thunderstorms and turbulence pose serious risks. Fog and low clouds hinder visibility, making navigation difficult, especially during takeoff and landing.

Monitoring weather forecasts closely is crucial for balloonists to ensure their safety and that of their passengers.

How Will I Know If The Event Is Cancelled?

Typically, information about the cancellation of Balloon Fiesta events would be communicated through various channels, including local news stations, the official Balloon Fiesta website, social media accounts, and announcements from event organizers and authorities.

Local TV stations, such as KRQE News 13 or KOAT Action 7 News, would likely provide updates on event cancellations due to weather or other reasons.

Additionally, the official Balloon Fiesta website and social media pages would post announcements regarding any changes to the schedule or cancellations. It’s always a good idea to check multiple sources for the most up-to-date information.

We followed their Twitter for official updates during our visit.

What Do I Need to Pack For the 2024 Balloon Fiesta?

For the 2024 Balloon Fiesta, pack essentials like layers of clothing for the cool mornings and warmer daytime temperatures. Comfortable shoes are a must for walking, and don’t forget sun protection with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the colorful balloons and memorable moments. Keep your devices charged with a portable charger. I recommend This Portable Charger.

Most of the events are held on the big lawn at Balloon Fiesta Park, where you can set up a blanket and chairs to view the hot air balloon. I recommend packing both a backpack and warm clothing for sunrise and sunset.

This Small Travel Blanket is perfect to throw in your backpack.

You will need to go through a metal detector, but the line moved quickly when we went.

What Is Allowed?

One bag per person is allowed but will be inspected. Blankets or bulky clothing should be carried over the shoulder to be screened more quickly. Folding chairs are allowed but must be removed from the carrying case for inspection. Food of any kind for guest consumption is permitted.

What Is Prohibited?

Weapons (including knives over 4” blade length), any item that may be used as a projectile or one that is deemed dangerous by Public Safety personnel, any animal except a service animal., glass bottles and hard-sided coolers., alcohol of any kind and religious or Political paraphernalia.

Can I Bring My Dog?

If there had been dogs everywhere at the Balloon Fiesta, it would have made waiting for hours and hours worth it. Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed at the fiesta. However, service dogs are!

Is There Food At The 2024 Balloon Fiesta?

Yes, there is food available at the 2024 Balloon Fiesta. The event typically features a variety of food vendors offering a wide range of options to suit different tastes and preferences.

You can expect to find traditional festival favorites like funnel cakes, corn dogs, cotton candy, and a selection of international cuisines, gourmet dishes, and local specialties.

Our favorite dish was the Indian Taco, we also tried one of their humongoues turkey legs, which I don’t recommend.

Can I Bring My Own Food?

Yes, you can! And honestly, this will save you a lot of money if you do. Keep in mind that glass containers and alcohol are not allowed. You cannot use hard-sided coolers but bring a soft cooler bag.

Are There Alcoholic Beverages At The 2024 Balloon Fiesta?

Yes, alcoholic beverages are typically available at the 2024 Balloon Fiesta. The event usually includes designated areas or beverage tents where attendees can purchase beer, wine, and mixed cocktails.

The drinks were costly, about the same price as at a concert venue. You were also confined to the tent, as you couldn’t leave the area with alcohol.

Where Do I Park For The 2024 Balloon Fiesta?

As more people come to the Balloon Fiesta, traffic and parking problems are increasing. So, the Balloon Fiesta team works with different places around Albuquerque to help with parking.

They offer a special deal for guests to park at certain spots in Albuquerque and then take a special Balloon Fiesta bus to the park. You can check www.balloonfiesta.com/Park-Ride for any changes to the schedule or places. Remember, there’s no bus service on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

Here are some places where you can park and ride the bus:

  • Coronado Mall (Southwest corner) — 6600 Menaul Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110
  • Hoffmantown Church — 8888 Harper NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111
  • Cottonwood Mall — 10000 Coors Bypass NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114
  • Intel Parking Lot — 1600 Rio Rancho Blvd SE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124 (only on weekends)

How Much Time Should I Allow For Parking?

If you are planning to witness the Mass Ascension, plan to park for at least two hours. We almost missed it and had to run to the field to see it. The lines were insanely long, and the walk after parking was even longer.

Do I Need Cash For Parking?

Yes, bring cash. When we visited, the attendants only took cash. Third-party parking lots will also be available, which might be better if the other lots are full. You can expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $30 per day for parking.

Can I Park My RV?

RVs can park in the general parking for a single session, but overnight parking isn’t allowed. The cost depends on how many spaces are used. Visitors can also visit the website at balloonfiesta.com/RV-Information to see and book an RV parking spot. A reservation must be for a minimum of three nights.

When Should I Book My Hotel Reservation?

You should book your hotel for the Balloon Fiesta now, as everything will get overpriced and eventually sell out. As soon as your hotel is booked, buy the tickets. They usually don’t sell out, but getting everything far in advance is better due to how crowded it is.

Where Can I Purchase Balloon Fiesta Tickets

Always purchase tickets directly online at The Official Balloon Fiesta Website. Never buy tickets from a third-party vendor, as this could be a scam.

The cost per ticket is $15 per person per session. General Admission Tickets are good for one session, any day.

What Is A Session?

One Session includes all morning or evening activities. If you plan to stay there all morning and then return for the night, purchase two sessions. If you stay there all day, you could technically purchase one morning session and never leave. I didn’t see anyone checking.

Each day, except for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and the last Sunday, has two sessions: morning and evening. Morning sessions include activities like the Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension, while evening sessions feature the Balloon Glow. Although there are no balloon activities between sessions, guests are welcome to stay at the park, though most concessions close at midday.
