Hiking The Alkali Flat Trail

The trail is 4.4 miles long and gains 52 feet in elevation. You will start by driving to the end of the Dunes Drive parking lot, where you will park and start the trail. The Alkali Flat Trail is marked by red trail markers with a diamond symbol, which serves as a guide for hikers.

The trail takes you along the gypsum dune field, where you can experience these unique white sands up close. The dunes cover about 275 square miles, making it the largest gypsum dune field in the world.

I hiked the trail barefoot on a warm February day. Sinking my toes into the cool white sand while walking up and down the dunes felt nice.

*Tip – Don’t attempt this in summer; the bright sand will scorch your feet.

The dunes are composed of gypsum crystals, which are rare because gypsum is usually dissolved by water. The Tularosa Basin’s unique climate allows for the preservation of these dunes.

The trail leads to the edge of what was once Lake Otero, now an expansive flat area covered with alkali deposits.

• Walking on sand is more strenuous than on solid ground. Be prepared for a workout, particularly in hot weather.
• Temperatures can be extreme, especially in the summer. The area is exposed and does not have shade, so plan accordingly.
• Keeping an eye on the trail markers is essential. It’s easy to get lost if you stray from the marked path.
• Carry plenty of water, at least one gallon per person. Dehydration is a significant risk in this environment.
• Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Light-colored, long-sleeved clothing is recommended to protect against the sun.
• Best hiked early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the day’s peak heat. Check park hours to ensure you have ample time to complete the hike.
