Located in New Brunswick, Canada, there is a unique hike that many travelers seek out. This adventure can only be undertaken at low tide when the sea recedes. You can experience it yourself by visiting Hopewell Rocks Provincial Park near the Bay Of Fundy National Park. Here is everything you need to know.
The Bay Of Fundy
First, let’s talk about the iconic Bay Of Fundy! The Bay of Fundy, located between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada, is famous for having the highest tides in the world. The tides in the Bay of Fundy can reach up to 53 feet in height, a phenomenon caused by the unique shape of the bay, which funnels and amplifies the tidal forces.
The water flows in and out of the bay twice daily, creating dramatic tidal variations that expose mudflats, sea cliffs, and rock formations.

One of the best ways to experience the area is to hike to the ocean floor, which can be done at low tide!
Hike To The Ocean Floor
The hike leaves from the interactive center, where you will make your way outside and through the forest. This is a short walk, taking about fifteen minutes, and it is mostly downhill.

Once you get down to the end of the forest trail, you will see the staircase that will bring you down to the ocean floor.

It is 101 steps, so make sure you take that into account when going down. You will surely remember once it’s time to go back up.

Once you reach the bottom, you can walk around the ocean floor. We admired the seaweed on the rocks and the soaring sea stalks. You can also walk around and explore the ground while combing the beach.
When Can You Hike To The Ocean Floor?
You can only hike to the ocean floor at low tide, which happens twice daily. Always check the tide charts. You can also check the tide times at tideschart.com.

Why Is The Water Brown At Bay of Fundy?
The mud floor at the bay is a vast expanse of tidal mudflats that are exposed during low tide. These mudflats are composed of fine silt, clay, and organic matter that are deposited by the strong tidal currents.
The extreme tidal range causes large areas of the seabed to be revealed during low tide and submerged during high tide.
How Much Does it Cost To Visit The Bay Of Fundy?
It costs about $15 per person. You can read more about the tickets here.
