1. Raccoon Trail

For a fantastic fall hike near Denver, check out the Raccoon Trail at Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

This 3.4-mile hike offers a beautiful mix of aspen groves and dense forests that turn brilliant yellow and orange in fall.

The trail is moderate, making it a great option for a day hike with lovely scenery.

Tip: This trail is less crowded compared to some of the more famous spots, so you can enjoy the foliage in a more peaceful setting. Be sure to bring a map as the trail can be a bit winding.

2. Abyss Lake Trail

Abyss Lake Trail is one of my favorite spots for fall foliage hiking in Colorado, and it’s worth the drive to Grant, Colorado.

The hike is 11.7-mile but for fall foilage you only have to go about three miles in.

The trail will bring you through beautiful aspen groves and dense woods, offering incredible views of the changing colors against the mountains.

The climb can be a bit tough if you are continuing to Abyss Lake, framed by all those stunning autumn hues, is always worth it.

Even though getting to Grant requires a bit of effort, the breathtaking fall colors in Colorado make it a truly memorable experience.

After you are done with your hike take the drive over Kenosha Pass which will connect you to the small town of Fairplay. Kenosha Pass is dressed in fall colors and has plenty of stop-offs.

Tip: Prepare to be patient, this is one of the top trails for fall foliage in the state.

3. Coyote Trail

Coyote Trail is a fantastic spot for catching fall colors near Denver in Golden Gate Canyon State Park.

The 3.6-mile trail takes you through open meadows and shady forests, where you’ll see aspens and oak trees decked out in their autumn best.

It’s a moderate hike, so you’ll get a good workout, but the views are totally worth it.

You’ll find some great spots to take in the vibrant colors and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet away from the city.

Tip: Keep an eye out for local wildlife and enjoy the mix of fall foliage in Colorado as you hike. I saw an elk during my hike.

4. Route 12

Carbondale To Crested Butte

Even though there isn’t a standard hike for Route 12, I’m still counting it.

We made plenty of stops along the way and took short strolls through the forest, capturing some of the best fall foliage shots I had all year.

Route 12, also known as the “Scenic Byway,” is a stunning drive near Crested Butte, Colorado.

This route takes you through picturesque mountain scenery, including expansive aspen groves and charming small towns.
