Its significance was especially notable during the American Civil War. Automated in the 1970s, the lighthouse no longer requires a keeper but remains an important navigational aid and a cherished historical landmark within Fort Point State Park, continuing to captivate visitors with its rich heritage and scenic beauty.

The bell at Fort Point Lighthouse, installed in 1857 alongside the brick tower, was used to signal ships, particularly in foggy conditions when visibility was poor. The bell, made of brass, produced a distinctive sound that helped mariners locate the lighthouse and navigate safely.

It was rung manually by lighthouse keepers at regular intervals. In 1934, the bell was replaced by a more modern air horn system, but the original bell is still preserved as a historic artifact.

Today, it’s a key feature that adds to the lighthouse’s charm and historical significance, reminding visitors of its vital role in maritime navigation.
