This Cozy Maine Cabin Is the Perfect Winter Escape

January in Maine is one of my favorite times to adventure outside in its snowy wonderland. I love the days I can go cross-country skiing at hidden spots only known by locals. On other days, it’s enough to watch the snow fall from my window. A few weeks ago, the first snowfall arrived—later than usual, but still a welcome sight. So, we took a trip to Northern Maine for a cozy overnight stay at a cabin at Northern Outdoors. Here’s a peek into my winter escape.

Northern Outdoors

I have driven past The Forks Adventure Resort at Northern Outdoors a few times on my way to Quebec City. But I never got to stay there.

So as the first snow was predicted we took the two-hour drive north.

The cozy cabin is located in a remote area of Maine, in The Forks, which makes it great for stargazing and disappearing into nature.

The property has so many amenities too! In the winter you can stop at the popular Kennebec River Brewery before soaking in their outdoor hot tub.

The Forks Adventure Resort has a variety of cabins to choose from! We chose the Cozy Cabin, which is perfect for two people.

As soon as we arrived we drove up to our cabin. It was located at the top of the hill and we were surrounded by snow and trees. It was stunning!

I was beyond impressed when I opened the door. The cabin had a wooden decor, feeling like a true log cabin.

The bed was beyond comfortable and one of the best nights of sleep I had in the forest.

The heat also worked very well which was much needed on a 8-degree day in Maine.

We were excited to do a fire, but the fire pit was buried under the snow. Due to the plow, we weren’t able to do it.

But you can use the charcoal grill all year round! In addition to the grill, the cabin had a stove with a small burner, a full-size fridge, and a bathroom with a hot shower.

I loved watching the snow fall right from the porch. It felt like nobody else was around, despite a few other cabins around ours.

My favorite part of the entire trip was waking up the next morning to the quiet sound of the forest.

Kennebec River Brewery

While we normally cook at cabins, our visit was exceptionally freezing. So instead we took the walk down to Kennebec River Brewery, which was at the bottom of the hill.

I absolutely loved the decor of this brewery! It felt like a true snowy escape.

We ordered a few beers from the Kennebec River Brewery, known for crafting tasty ales and lagers using locally sourced two-row malted barleys from Aroostook County and pure Kennebec Valley water.

The handcrafted brews are only available in The Forks, Maine, so we made sure to savor every sip!

We sat by the fireplace, admiring the moose on the wall, before ordering some delicious food from the restaurant to enjoy before heading back to the cabin.

Hike Moxie Falls

You can also snowshoe or rent a snowmobile to hit the trails when visiting Northern Outdoors in winter.

We wanted to snowmobile but there wasn’t enough snow yet.

So instead, we decided to drive to Moxie Falls in the morning, which was a 20-minute drive north.

There was just enough snow to throw on our microspikes and head out onto the hiking trail.

It was beautiful! The sun was shining on the snow, making it glisten. It felt like a true Maine winter wonderland.

Katahdin Adventure Base Camp

In the summer, Northern Outdoors also hosts the Katahdin Adventure Base Camp at The Big Moose Inn near Baxter State Park.

After our visit here, I will be adding that location to my Maine summer bucket list!
