Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

While walking along Popham Beach in Maine, I noticed steam coming out of a small trailer by the ocean. As I made my way closer I saw people swimming in the water.

Normally this wouldn’t be a weird occasion, but it was more than bizarre in January. That is when I noticed the steam was coming from a sauna and those swimming took a cold plunge into the ocean.

I knew at that moment that I had to try it for myself! Here is why this mobile sauna in Maine, should be on your bucket list.

Cedar Grove Sauna

I quickly found out that the horse trailer turned sauna, is owned by Cedar Grove Sauna, a wellness company that offers mobile saunas around the state of Maine.

Their mobile saunas travel along the Maine coast, setting up at breweries, beaches, and other scenic spots.

The mobile sauna we visited is located right on Popham Beach, in Phippsburg next to Spinney’s Oceanside Restaurant.

This is actually the same area where I viewed the Northern Lights in Maine this past year!

They popped up this winter and will be around until May. There was just something so magical about being able to sit in the sauna on the snowy beach in January.

There are two saunas on the beach, The Reef and The Eddy. The Reef is for smaller groups while The Eddy can hold more.

We chose The Reef, here is a look into my visit.

We took a walk along Popham Beach before making our way to Spinneys, which had a small sign that said Sauna pointing to the left.

We followed it and saw the bright red horsetrailer in the distance. We were greeted by a friendly staff member who walked us through how to use the sauna.

She showed me how to adjust the heat settings so I could make it as hot as we wanted.

We made our way into the sauna, soaking in the heat while enjoying the view of the ocean right through the window.

After ten minutes, we were heating up quickly so we went out into the door of the trailer and opened the door.

The fresh sea breeze hit my face and cooled me down.

It was a 10-degree day in Maine, and I felt it immediately. It was so refreshing!

We went back in and heated ourselves up for another 20 minutes, laying down and letting myself disappear into the relaxation.

Plunging Into The Sea

At this point, we knew it was time to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. It would be freezing today, but we were ready.

I have done cold plunges through various Nordic Spas and Hot Springs throughout the country, but into the Atlantic Ocean in January. This would be a first.

We made our way down the stairs, running down the beach and plunging in.

My heart stopped for a minute but it felt amazing at the same time.

We did not last long and ran back up the beach, quickly dipping our feet into the wooden bucket and making our way into the sauna.

My body was pins and needles and I felt like I had a shot of caffeine go through my entire body.

We repeated this process again and again until our hour and fifteen minutes was up.

Plunging into the ocean is at your own risk, and it’s important to note that sharks and seals can frequent the area.

Just be smart and mindful—dip in and get out during the off-season.

Cold plunges provide a variety of benefits for your body, including improved circulation, reduced muscle inflammation, boosted immune function, and increased mental clarity.
