Maine has a variety of state parks for you to enjoy, while some are just a quick drive away from Portland, others are a far drive away. I was happy to be able to explore Shackford Head State Park in Eastport Maine, which is one of the most eastern towns in the state. Here is everything you need to know!

Shackford Head State Park

Shackford Head State Park, located in Eastport, Maine, reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage. The Passamaquoddy people have inhabited the area for thousands of years. European settlers arrived in the early 19th century and named the park after John Shackford, an early settler.

Additionally, During the War of 1812, Eastport, including Shackford Head, held strategic importance due to its proximity to Canada and was briefly occupied by the British. The area’s economy in the 19th and early 20th centuries was driven by fishing and shipping, with Eastport becoming a major sardine fishing port.

In the late 20th century, land conservation efforts led to the establishment of Shackford Head State Park, preserving its natural beauty and providing recreational opportunities.

Hiking At Shackford Head State Park

Shackford Head State Park has trails for everyone, from easy paths to tougher ones. You can take in the great views but be careful near the high cliffs.

The best spots to reach the shore are Cony Beach and the Broad Cove Trail. Watch out for the tides, which can rise quickly by 20 feet.

The Shackford Head and Overlook Trails (1.2-mile round trip) offer amazing views of Cobscook Bay and nearby peninsulas. For a tougher hike with more views, you can take the Ship Point Trail (another half-mile loop) and then head back to the parking lot via the Schooner Trail, making it about 2 miles total.

Beware Of Fire Ants

There is a sign that tells you to beware of fire ants, and you should listen to it. If you do choose to hike, wear tall socks and try to cover your legs. I do not recommend bringing your dog.

A recent report on Alltrails said their dogs got so bit up by the fire ants that they had to take them to the vet. Therefore, you have to be careful when hiking here.
