If you’re looking for one of the most scenic waterfall hikes in Iceland, Hengifoss should be high on your list.

Towering cliffs, red rock stripes, and a bonus waterfall along the way make this trail in East Iceland unforgettable.

Whether you’re road tripping the Ring Road or just passing through, this hike is worth the stop — especially if you love dramatic views, a good challenge, and a scoop of ice cream at the end.

Hengifoss Waterfall in East Iceland

If you’re road tripping through East Iceland, don’t skip the Hengifoss hike — it’s one of the most scenic and rewarding waterfall trails in the country.

At 128 meters tall, Hengifoss is Iceland’s third-highest waterfall, known for its dramatic red clay stripes cutting through basalt cliffs.

But what makes this hike even more special is the journey to get there!

You will hike past grazing sheep, rushing rivers, and a hidden waterfall called Litlanesfoss that’s just as stunning in its own way.

What to Expect on the Hengifoss Hike

We hiked Hengifoss in late June during Iceland’s midnight sun.

With the sun shining overhead and warm, clear skies, it was perfect hiking weather.

We started around noon from the free parking lot at the base of the trail, where you’ll spot a set of wooden stairs leading up the hillside.

From there, it’s a steady uphill climb on a dirt path, with a few sheep gates to open and close as you go.

While we didn’t see any sheep on the trail itself, we did spot a few dotting the cliffs around us — a classic Icelandic touch.

The trail is just under 3.1 miles with an elevation gain of 869ft.

It took us about two hours round trip, including photo stops and time spent admiring the views.

Viewing Litlanesfoss

About halfway up, you’ll come across Litlanesfoss — a smaller waterfall framed by unique basalt columns.

Don’t miss Litlanesfoss along the way! The basalt columns are just as impressive as the falls.

It’s a great place to take a break and soak in the sound of water crashing through the gorge below.

You can also enjoy the view of babbling brooks along the way.

The higher you climb, the better the views — this valley opened up as we made our way uphill.

Reaching the Viewpoint — and Going Beyond

As we climbed higher, Hengifoss slowly came into view.

At first, it looked so far away and small in the distance that I knew we were in for a real workout.

A glimpse of Hengifoss from the trail. It looks small at first, but just wait until you get closer.

But once you get closer, the waterfall is absolutely breathtaking — especially if you keep going past the viewing platform.

Just take the boardwalk to the viewing area, and you will know you are close!

We carefully continued up the rocky path to get even closer, and the payoff was worth it.

Just make sure you have sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, especially if the ground is wet or muddy.

Hiking Down From Hengifoss

On the way down, we took the alternate loop trail on the left side. Just cross the boardwalk to switch sides.

It’s an easy descent on a dirt path and leads you right back to the parking lot.

The full loop is a fun way to see the landscape from another angle — and it feels good to know the hard part is behind you.

The Hengifoss Food Truck

One of the best surprises of the day? The Hengifoss Food Truck is waiting at the trailhead.

They serve up homemade sheep milk ice cream made from their own herd, and the only place in Iceland doing it.

It was the perfect treat after a hot summer hike.

They also offer soup and traditional waffles if you’re craving something heartier.

Tips for Hiking Hengifoss

Here are some tips you can follow for your hike to Hengifoss!

Wear proper hiking shoes: The trail is mostly dirt and gravel with a steady incline. If you plan to go beyond the viewing platform, shoes with good grip are a must.

Bring water and snacks: There’s no water along the trail, and the uphill climb can be tiring — especially if it’s sunny. Stay hydrated and pack a small snack.

Start early or late: If you’re visiting in summer during Iceland’s midnight sun, consider starting early or in the evening to avoid mid-day heat and crowds.

Watch your footing beyond the viewpoint: The extra section past the official platform gives you better photos, but it can be rocky and uneven. Go slow and be cautious.

Use the loop trail: We took one trail up and the other one down to complete a loop. Both lead to the same parking lot and give you slightly different views.

Respect the gates and wildlife: Close all gates behind you and don’t disturb any sheep you see along the cliffs.

Treat yourself after: Don’t miss the Hengifoss Food Truck at the base — the sheep milk ice cream and waffles are the perfect reward after the hike.
