Great Basin National Park is a hidden gem in Baker, Nevada—perfect for those looking to escape the crowds while still experiencing the beauty of America’s national parks.
Known for its remote location and stunning night skies, Great Basin has even been designated an International Dark Sky Park, making it one of the best places for stargazing in the U.S.
During my visit, I explored several trails, but one that stood out was the Sky Island Forest Trail—a short, easy, and scenic hike that anyone can enjoy.
The Sky Island Forest Trail
Distance: 0.3 miles (loop)
Elevation Gain: 22 feet
Difficulty: Easy
Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
Trailhead Location: Bristlecone Parking Lot, Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive
I explored Great Basin National Park’s hiking trails and one of my favorites is a trail that every hiker can do, The Sky Island Forest Trail.
This hike is only 0.3 miles with an elevation gain of 22 feet. The trailhead begins at the Bristlecone Parking lot at the end of the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive.

Despite its short distance, this peaceful boardwalk trail takes you through a rare high-elevation alpine forest—sitting at 10,000 feet above sea level!
You can add on the Stella Lake Hike, which will make your hike even longer. A Hike To Great Basin National Park’s Hidden Alpine Lake!
The hike will bring you along the boardwalk, which weaves into the high alpine conifer forest. You can read the signs which explain in detail how the forest exists.
Why is this forest special?
- The high elevation makes it one of the most unusual forests in the U.S.
- The cooler temperatures provide a break from the Nevada heat.
- The surrounding views of Wheeler Peak and the Great Basin landscape are stunning.
This whole area of the Great Basin sits at an elevation of 10,000 feet, making it a strange yet beautiful place to have a forest. Due to the elevation of this hike, the weather can be cool, but in the summer, expect hot temperatures.
