Colorado is a winter destination that attracts ski enthusiasts and outdoor lovers. While many hiking trails close in the winter due to heavy snowfall, there are some that I will never forget. One is the incredible Mount Sniktau Trail, which is one of Colorado’s massive 13ers.
What Is A 13er?
A 13er is a mountain that stands over 13,000 Feet. Colorado is home to 637 13ers, making most of them accessible. However, hiking them in the winter can be dangerous due to heavy snowfall.
Is Hiking 13ers Easy?
No, hiking 13ers is hard, but many can train to hike one. The lack of oxygen makes each step feel like 10, and there is usually a constant incline, where you will experience hours of climbing to the top.
Many require climbing over giant boulders or rocks, making the ascend difficult, too. But they are so much fun with the proper preparation.
Mount Sniktau Trail
I hiked Mount Snikatau at the beginning of winter, when the snow was packed down enough to use microspikes and not snowshoes.
First, you will drive up Loveland Pass, which is a terrifying road in the winter. Make sure there was no recent snowfall and that the pass is open.
I always check this webcam before making sure the road has been cleared. You won’t go to the top of the pass-through, and it’s easy to pull off in the parking lot of Mount Sniktau.
From there, your hike begins! It is a 1.8-mile trek to the top, with an elevation gain of 1,555 Feet. It is a constant uphill hike, which will be hard for most. I recommend stopping every few minutes to enjoy the view and drink water. Keeping your pace slow and steady is the best way to conquer a 13er in Colorado.

While the hiking path is noticeable, there are rocks along the route. Stay on the trail, especially during winter when you don’t know what’s under the snow.
Once you reach the summit, enjoy the breathtaking views. We hiked during sunrise, which was incredible! The summit is 13,219 feet above sea level and is windy since there are no trees to stop the wind. Spend some time enjoying your hiking snacks before making your way down.
You will descend the 1.8 miles back down; be careful with your footing and rest your knees every few minutes. Some say going down a 13er is more challenging than going up. But as long as you take your time, you will be fine!
It is a beautiful hike, especially on a winter day. Just make sure to dress warm; the wind is no joke.
A common addition to this hike is to include a second summit nearby by climbing up to the top of Mount Cupid, another 13,000-foot peak nearby. Many will do both in one day during summer.
How Long Does It Take To Hike Mount Sniktau In Winter?
The hike can take anywhere from 3-6 hours. Always start early in the morning since daylight hours are short during winter. Plan for extra time if you are struggling or want to enjoy the Summit for a few hours.

Mount Sniktau Trail Safety Tips
Always, and I mean always, check trail conditions before you go. If no hikes have been done recently, do not attempt the hike. You can check recent hikes on Alltrails.
Do not try to hike after a heavy snowfall or when a storm is forecasted.
Do not hike this mountain unless your Winter Hiking Checklist items are packed. Here are a few you have to have.
Warm Clothing: Make sure you have more than enough warm clothing. The top of the 13ers can be extremely windy. Pack gloves, a hat, a neck shield that you can pull over your face, ski goggles, and more
Snowshoes & Microspikes: During winter, hikers recommend having snowshoes and spikes to complete this route. Any time you are adventuring in the Colorado backcountry in the winter months, you must also be prepared for avalanche danger.
High Protein Snacks: You will burn a lot of calories during your hike, and your body will need you to replenish them for more energy. High-protein snacks such as almonds and cliff bars are necessary.
Water: Back more than enough water! Your body is going to need it. You can use a Bladder that can hold most of the water, but in the winter, it could freeze. I try to bring a few water bottles nestled between my warm clothing to keep them warm.
First Aid Kit: You never know what is going to happen. Having a First Aid Kit is easy to throw right into your back. This will include bandaids, tweezers, Advil, and more.
Lastly, always tell someone when you are hiking and when you start. If they don’t hear from you
