Hawaii has many beautiful destinations, from black sand beaches to lava tubes; there is truly so much to admire. In addition to its beauty, there are so many hikes for you to enjoy during your visit. One of my favorites is located at ʻAkaka Falls State Park on Hawaii’s Big Island.
ʻAkaka Falls State Park
The park is situated along the northeastern Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, near Honomu and approximately 11 miles north of Hilo.
The park’s main attraction is the impressive ʻAkaka Falls, which plunges 442 feet or 135 meters into a gorge below. The waterfall is surrounded by verdant vegetation and dramatic cliffs, creating a breathtaking sight for visitors.

The park has many beautiful native Hawaiian plants, including ohia trees, hapuu ferns, and ti plants. Birdwatchers may also spot native bird species, such as the Hawaiian Hawk, Apapane, and Amakihi, within the park’s forested areas.
But, one of my favorite activities was hiking the ʻAkaka Loop Trail!
ʻAkaka Loop Trail
This scenic hike is a 0.4-mile loop trail that winds through the lush tropical rainforest of the park.
The trail is well-maintained and features paved pathways, stairs, and footbridges. Hikers can witness gorgeous plant species along the trail, including bamboo groves, orchids, ferns, and towering trees.

The hike will bring you on a trail around the park, which includes steep staircases and waterfall views. You will hear ʻAkaka Falls in the distance, and as you make your way to the platform, you will see it in all its glory.

There are a few places to stop off and take pictures of the falls from different angles. I could honestly spend all day here.
The relaxing sound of the waterfall and vibrant green surroundings were among my favorite days. You can also enjoy the mini waterfalls along the hike as well!

Where To Park For The ʻAkaka Loop Trail?
There is a parking lot at the entry of ʻAkaka State Park. There will be an attendee there to guide traffic in and out. They will close the parking lot when it’s full, which is what happened to us.
No need to worry; there is plenty of street parking. However, you do have to walk further if you grab a spot there. Either way, it was worth the extra half mile.
Where Is ʻAkaka Falls State Park?
The state park is located on the east side of the Big Island at the end of ‘Akaka Falls Road or Highway 220, 3.6 miles southwest of Honomu.
It is about an hour from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. I would recommend doing both on the same trip as we did.
How Much Does It Cost To Visit ʻAkaka Falls State Park?
It only costs $5 per person to visit the state park. You can pay by Credit Card only at the pay station once you park. The fees help maintain and preserve the park’s natural beauty.
When Is ʻAkaka Falls State Park Open?
The park is open daily from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. You can visit the park any time of the year!
What Are The Best Times To Visit ʻAkaka Falls State Park?
The hike can get busy in the early afternoon, so I recommend going first thing in the morning or around 4:00 PM. You can go anytime since there are extra places to park and plenty of room on the trail.
I loved this hike in Hawaii! One of my other favorites was the Thurston Lava Tube in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Big Island is truly one of my favorites!
