The Aare Gorge is a narrow river canyon carved over thousands of years by the Aare River.

Stretching 1.4 km (0.9 miles) and reaching depths of 180 meters (590 feet), this natural wonder is also known as Aareschlucht in German.

The gorge features wooden walkways and tunnels built into the rock walls, allowing visitors to walk through its dramatic scenery.

How to Get to Aare Gorge

By Train:

The easiest way to reach the Aare Gorge is by train. Take a train from Interlaken or Lucerne to Meiringen, then transfer to a local train stopping at Aareschlucht West or Aareschlucht Ost stations.

  • From Interlaken: ~45 minutes with one train change in Meiringen.
  • From Lucerne: ~1 hour 15 minutes via train.

By Car:

If you’re driving, use the designated car park at the west entrance. Use GPS coordinates: 46.72005, 8.20461.

Your hike starts at the West Entrance, which is right next to the parking area and train station.

You will walk through the large doors and into a small tunnel. The tunnel is slippery and cold, so wear good shoes with a grip.

Best Hiking Trail In Switzerland

Towards the end of the walk, you will see a beautiful waterfall. We visited in late April when the snowmelt melted, forcing the water to move faster than usual.

At the end of the gorge, you’ll find a gate. If it’s open, you can continue to the east entrance; otherwise, you’ll turn around and walk back.

The best time to hike the Aare Gorge is from April to October.

  • Spring (April – June): High water levels from snowmelt make the river even more dramatic.
  • Summer (June – September): Best weather and longer daylight hours.
  • Fall (September – October): Fewer crowds and beautiful autumn colors.

How Long Does It Take To Hike Aare Gorge?

The entire trail is only 1.1 miles each way, so 2.2 miles total, and it takes two hours to complete.

You will want to stay longer for pictures and stop. It is an out-and-back trail when the gate is closed, so you will end where you started.

The entire hike is beautiful! There are very narrow areas where you will have to wait your turn to go; however, there are railings the whole time.

Some places are not recommended for those afraid of heights, but you can also hold the cliff or railing when needed.

Do I Need Reservations?

No, they do not accept reservations; you will purchase your pass at the visitor’s center.

How Much Does It Cost To Visit?

Entrance to Aare Gorge is priced at CHF 12.00 for individuals, while children under six years can enter for free, and those aged 6 to 15.99 years can enter for CHF 7.50.

What Discounts Are Accepted?

Guest passes from Jungfrau Region Tourismus AG, Interlaken Tourismus, Brienz Tourismus, and Obwalden Tourismus receive a 20% discount.

Holders of the annual or summer season ticket of the Meiringen-Hasliberg mountain railways enjoy free admission.

Can I Bring My Dog?

Yes, dogs are welcome in the Aare Gorge on a short leash and free of charge.
