Vincent van Gogh has always been one of my favorite artists, so when I learned that he once lived in Paris, I knew I had to visit his former home in Montmartre. Standing in front of the blue door, I couldn’t help but imagine Van Gogh walking these very streets, inspired by the vibrant Parisian art scene. However, his life was marked by hardship and mental health struggles. Despite these challenges, Van Gogh’s passion for art never wavered.

He started his artistic journey relatively late, in his late twenties, after trying various jobs, including working as a teacher, a preacher, and an art dealer.

Van Gogh’s early works were primarily dark and somber, reflecting the influence of Dutch painters and his struggles. Paintings like “The Potato Eaters” showcase his early style, focusing on peasant life’s harsh realities.

It wasn’t until he moved to Paris in 1886 that his art changed dramatically. In Paris, he met other artists like Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who inspired him to experiment with color and technique.

How Van Gogh’s Time in His Montmartre Home Shaped His Art

Although he only sold one painting during his lifetime, his work has since gained worldwide recognition. His paintings are celebrated for their emotional honesty and vivid beauty. His life story, marked by perseverance and passion in the face of adversity, continues to inspire millions around the globe.
