One of my favorite things when visiting a new city is walking around and admiring the street art. From large murals to vibrant art installations, it brings me joy. I love learning about all the artists I find while trying to find the meaning behind some of the larger-than-life works of art.

I recently visited Montmartre, a quirky art district in the hills of Paris, where I spent my day wandering the streets and capturing some of the best street art there. Here is everything you need to know about street art in Montmartre!

Street Art In Montmartre

Thanks to its artistic vibe, Montmartre was one of my favorite neighborhoods in Paris. Known for its bohemian history and artistic heritage, Montmartre has long been a haven for artists.

Street art in Montmartre is diverse and constantly evolving. Montmartre street art includes graffiti, large-scale murals, stencil art, paste-ups, and quirky installations, making it one of the best places in Paris for urban art lovers.

Artistic Past

Montmartre has a rich history of attracting artists, from Picasso and Van Gogh to modern street artists. The area’s artistic roots date back to the 19th century when it was a hub for the avant-garde.

You can even visit Vincent van Gogh’s apartment door when visiting (which I will share with you in a future post!).

Famous Street Artists in Montmartre

Many well-known street artists have left their mark in Montmartre. Names such as Invader, Miss Tic, and Jef Aérosol are frequently associated with the area’s street art scene. These artists often incorporate social and political commentary into their work.

Additionally, street art in Montmartre often carries powerful messages, touching on love, freedom, and rebellion.

Where to Find Street Art in Montmartre

Here are the best places where I saw street art in Montmartre!

1. Rue Lepic

Rue Lepic has been a gathering place for artists for centuries. It was once home to Vincent van Gogh, and its bohemian charm continues to attract modern-day street artists.

I loved the colorful pieces I found on this street. My favorite was “We’ll Always Have Paris” by stikki_peaches, which features Audrey Hepburn and the famous line in her Casablanca.

2. Place du Tertre

Place du Tertre, located in the heart of Montmartre, is one of Paris’s most famous and vibrant squares. It has been a central hub for artists since the early 20th century.

It was a gathering place for famous artists like Picasso, Modigliani, and Utrillo, who lived and worked in Montmartre. Today, it continues to be a lively spot for painters, caricaturists, and portraitists.

The most famous art piece here is Amour Notoire by Patrick Rubinstein. An Artist is known for his mesmerizing kinetic art, which takes you on a visual journey. The drawing inspiration comes from Surrealism, Street art, Pop art, and the Renaissance,

One of the most charming aspects of Place du Tertre is the opportunity to watch artists at work.

Dozens of artists set up their easels daily, creating a vibrant open-air gallery.

3. Rue Saint-Rustique

Rue Saint-Rustique dates back to the medieval period and retains much of its old-world charm. Its cobblestone pavement and historic architecture provide a glimpse into Montmartre’s past.

I stumbled upon this large and bright mural down the cobblestone street, before turning the corner and seeing this.

This small mural from Miss Sto translates to “Drink without an ex and without harming your health.” Good advice, in my opinion!

4. Rue Gabrielle

Enjoy a leisurely walk along Rue Gabrielle to appreciate its historic and artistic charm fully. The street is relatively short, allowing you to explore quickly.

It is also home to one of the top stops during a guided street art tour, and that is this gorgeous portrait painted by SWED.

Rue des Saules runs through a historic part of Montmartre, near the famous vineyard Clos Montmartre.

Eventually, you will reach one of the most popular stops, the small art gallery on a wall. You can also go inside.

6. Le Mur des Je t’aime

The last stop is the famous wall where “I love you” is written in multiple languages, celebrating universal love.

As of May 2024, the mural was still closed, but you can marvel at it from a short distance and snap a photograph through the fence as I did!
