Let me start by saying that no beavers were hurt during the making of this tasty Canadian treat. BeaverTails are a staple in Canada; if you have had one, you probably understand why.

I tried my first one during my recent trip to Quebec City, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Here is everything you need to know about this Canadian dessert.

What Are They?

In Canada, “BeaverTails” are a popular pastry snack rather than the literal tails of beavers.

They are made from fried dough that is stretched to resemble the shape of a beaver’s tail and then topped with various sweet toppings. There are 120 possible topping combinations to try, so feel free to have more than one!

Common toppings include cinnamon sugar, chocolate, maple syrup, and more. They are often enjoyed at outdoor events, festivals, and winter festivities across Canada. You can find them in BeaverTails® storefront locations throughout the entire country all year long.

BeaverTails®

So, how did this tasty Canadian treat start? Pam and Grant Hooker begin serving BeaverTails® pastries at the Killaloe Fair, west of Ottawa, Ontario. The original stores opened at Ottawa landmarks, the Byward Market and Rideau Canal, in the late 1970s.

Their piping-hot, hand-stretched whole-wheat pastries are both crispy and chewy at the same time.

My First BeaverTail Experience

I was lucky enough to be strolling down Champlain Street when I saw a picture of these delicious pastries in a storefront window. After I walked inside Queues de Castor Vieux Québec, the smell was just another reason to try my first one.

They had so many combinations to try. I chose the Brwownie. , which is a BeaverTail topped with a chocolate hazelnut spread, brownie, and white chocolate chunk chips.

They have reported that they go through 48.7 tons of chocolate hazelnut spread each year. After I tried it, I understood why.

It was sweet, crispy, gooey, and absolutely delicious! They are also huge, enough for two people to share. But no judgment if you want to eat one or five by yourself.

Where To Eat BeaverTails

While you can try BeaverTails all over Canada, the original place that serves them is, you guessed it, BeaverTails!

Celebrities That Love Them!
