If you are looking for a scenic hike in Acadia National Park this summer, try the Ship Harbor Trail. The trail is located on the beautiful Southwest Harbor of the park and will take you along the water through the forest. Here is everything you need to know!
Hike The Ship Harbor Trail
Ship Harbor is located southwest of Acadia, away from popular tourist destinations like the terrifying Beehive Trail.

Many come here for a short hike, where you can picnic on rocks or walk the area to bird watch. You can explore the tidepools to find unique shells and rocks at low tide.
It is a peaceful area that can get crowded during peak season. But even at it’s most crowded its still much calmer than the rest of Acadia National Park.
Step By Step Guide To Ship Harbor Trail
The hike starts from the parking lot, where you will keep right at the first junction. The trail then leads along the shore of a narrow cove.

After passing the rocky headland, follow the blue blazes on the rocks and turn right again.

The trail continues through spruce woods before reopening up and returning to the parking lot.

How Long Is The Hike?
The Ship Harbor Trail is a figure-8 trail covering 1.4 miles. It takes about half an hour to complete, longer if you want to stop and enjoy the views.
Is There A Fee To Hike Ship Harbor Trail?
Acadia National Park charges a fee to enter. The cost is per vehicle, motorcycle or person if you enter on foot, horse, or bike.
I recommend purchasing the America The Beautiful Pass, which covers all US National Parks for one year!
Is The Trail Dog-Friendly?
Your pups can join you on this beautiful hike. However, leashes must be 6 feet or shorter since the trail is narrow.
Where Is Ship Harbor Trail?
You can reach the hike by driving to Maine 102A from Seawall Campground and Wonderland Trail.
Want to hike more in Acadia? The Beech Mountain Trail is just a short drive away. Read all about that trail in my hiking guide.
