When Is Peak Fall Foliage in Maine in 2025?

The best time to catch the peak fall foliage in Maine is usually between late September and mid-October.

The colors start changing in the northern regions first and slowly make their way down to the coast.

If you want to catch the best views, plan your visit around the first two weeks of October. This is when the peak will take place.

• Northern Maine: Expect peak colors from late September through early October—typically the last week of September into the first week of October.
• Western & Central Maine: The second and third weeks of October (especially around Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend) are generally peak season in these regions.
• Coastal & Southern Maine: Peak foliage tends to occur around October 21–27, especially along the coast and in southern locales.

Best Places to See Maine’s Fall Foliage

1. Acadia National Park

Acadia is one of the most popular spots in Maine for fall foliage and for good reason.

The combination of colorful leaves, granite cliffs, and ocean views is simply breathtaking.

Be sure to drive the Park Loop Road or hike up Cadillac Mountain for some of the best vistas.

One of my favorite ways to see the fall foliage in Acadia National Park is to rent a bike and bike the carriage roads.

2. Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway

This 52-mile loop takes you through some of Maine’s most picturesque landscapes.

The drive around Rangeley Lake offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains, which explode in shades of red, orange, and yellow during the fall.

3. Camden Hills State Park

Camden Hills State Park is perfect if you’re looking for a less crowded spot.

It’s also right next to the water, giving you the best of both worlds, with ocean views in the distance.

The hike up Mount Battie rewards you with panoramic views of the town of Camden, the harbor, and the vibrant foliage that surrounds it.

4. Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is a great spot to catch some amazing fall colors.

Sometimes, the best way to experience fall foliage is from the comfort of your car.

Maine has countless scenic byways that are perfect for a leisurely drive.

Besides the Kancamagus Highway and Rangeley Lakes, check out the Moosehead Lake area for a quieter, more peaceful experience.

2. Hiking

For those who love to explore on foot, Maine offers plenty of hiking trails that showcase the fall colors.

• Book Early: Fall is a popular time to visit Maine, so accommodations can fill up fast. Make your reservations early to ensure you get the best spots.
• Dress in Layers: The weather in Maine can be unpredictable in the fall. Mornings and evenings can be chilly, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers.
• Pack Snacks: Some of the best fall foliage spots are in remote areas. Pack snacks and drinks for your drive or hike, so you’re not caught without provisions.
• Bring Cash For Fall Treats: You will see plenty of small stands offering homemade pumpkin whoopie pies or freshly made pies. These are some of the best highlights of visiting New England in the Fall.
