I love discovering restaurants that serve fresh, organic food, especially in a world full of chemicals and over-processed options. During my trip to Quebec City, I was thrilled to find Bistro Hortus, a restaurant attached to my hotel, offering exactly that.

We walked in to make reservations, and the warm decor and cozy vibe immediately set the tone—I knew we were in for a treat.

Farm To Table Dining

If you’re looking for a dining experience that blends freshness and creativity, Bistro Hortus is the place to be.

This restaurant focuses on local and organic products, with a “Farm to Table” philosophy led by Chef Stéphane Roth. His unique cooking style brings out the best in everything from meat and fish to vegetables.

One of the coolest things about Bistro Hortus is that they grow some of their own produce in two rooftop gardens right above the restaurant. You can literally taste the freshness in each dish.

While space limits the amount of crops they can grow, they partner with local Quebec farmers to ensure their ingredients are organic and high-quality.

They even have their beehives, located on a strawberry field at Île d’Orléans and on the rooftop of the Hotel du Vieux Québec. These bees not only provide honey for the restaurant, but they also play a key role in the ecosystem by pollinating the gardens.

Now let’s take a look at what we ate during our visit!

We started with the farm-to-table appetizer, created by the kitchen team using products from local partners, available in the evening. Our dish featured variations of duck, which was delicious.

Then we tried the Gaspésie halibut with quinoa, Brin-Nature red beets, fennel, and a Quebec elderberry sauce. It was dressed with bright colors, and the freshness of the halibut was mouthwatering.

Lastly, I tried the vegetarian lasagna with homemade vegetable ratatouille, Chemin Hatley and cheddar cheese, cranberry ketchup, and a side salad.

The Wine List

In addition to their delicious food, they also offer an extensive wine list. We enjoyed a bottle from Domaine De Lavoie, located in Rougemont, QC.

This red blend of Frontenac Noir, Marechal Foch, and St. Croix had hints of vanilla, berry, and tobacco. It was the perfect complement to our meal full of bold, explosive flavors!

When Are They Open?

Bistro Hortus is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to 10 pm, and on weekends from 9:30 am to 10 pm. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
