There’s nothing better than stumbling upon one of the world’s largest telephones, and that’s exactly what happened during our drive through Maine.
If you weren’t looking for it, you’d probably pass right by, missing out on a unique piece of history. Here’s a look at the World’s Largest Telephone.
The World’s Largest Telephone
The World’s Largest Telephone is located in the small, remote town of Bryant Pond in western Maine, near the New Hampshire border.
You’ll find it right in the parking lot of the local post office. If you’re not paying attention, you might just drive right by — but that would be a real shame!
Back in 1983, the last hand-cranked phone system in the U.S. stopped cranking, and Bryant Pond, a small village in western Maine, switched to direct-dial service.

In 1981, a larger phone company tried to buy them out and upgrade the service, but the locals resisted — they loved the old crank phones, where each household had a unique ring and the familiar operator connected your call.

Eventually, the Hathaways sold, and the switch to modern service was made in 1983. But the town wanted a way to remember their beloved crank phones.
Enter Gil Whitman, a local sculptor and WWII vet, who created a giant 14-foot candlestick phone as a tribute.

The World’s Largest Telephone sculpture, unveiled in 2008, now stands proudly in Remembrance Park, celebrating both the smallest phone company and what’s said to be the world’s largest telephone.
