During a recent trip to Switzerland, I made a quick stop in Basel after traveling from Paris, and I’m so glad I did. This city, sitting right on the Rhine River and bordering both France and Germany, is packed with history, art, and charm.

Even though my visit was short, Basel left a big impression on me. If you’re wondering what to do in Basel, there are plenty of options to keep you busy. Here’s what to do in Basel Switzerland while you’re there.

Basel, Switzerland

A Little History About Basel

Basel has been around since Roman times, so it’s no surprise the city feels like it has stories around every corner.

At the same time, it’s super modern, with an incredible art scene and a fun, laid-back vibe.

Best Things To Do In Basel

I wish I had more time to explore the museums around town, but we only had one night in Basel before making our way to Interlaken. If you’re wondering what is there to do in Basel, here are some ideas:

1. Treat Yourself to Swiss Cordon Bleu

Cordon bleu is a beloved Swiss comfort food, and in Basel, it’s taken to new heights.

This iconic dish, with its breaded cutlet stuffed with ham and gooey melted cheese, is a staple in many Swiss restaurants.

I had the pleasure of trying it at Gifthüttli, one of Basel’s most historic and famous restaurants.

While cordon bleu originated in France, Switzerland embraced it in the mid-20th century, making it their own with local ingredients like Bündner ham and raclette cheese.

There were murals everywhere, painted roads, fountains, and so much more. The art was vibrant and full of life, creating a colorful backdrop to the city’s historic architecture.

Even on a rainy day, it was perfect.

3. Sip Cocktails At Hinz & Kunz

After researching the best cocktail bar in Basel, I came across Hinz & Kunz.

The menu offered a wide variety of cocktails, including creative in-house drinks! Not only were they pretty to look at but they were also delicious.

It’s no surprise that Hinz & Kunz has won multiple awards, including Best Whisky Bar in Switzerland 2019 and Best Newcomer Bar in 2015.

If you’re in Basel and looking for a great bar, I highly recommend this spot.

4. Try Basler Läckerli

No trip to Basel is complete without tasting Basler Läckerli, the city’s famous spiced cookies.

They’re sweet, soft, and full of flavor. Stop by Jakob’s Basler Läckerli to grab some—you’ll probably want to bring a box home, too.

These little treats are not only a local delicacy but also a symbol of Basel’s culinary heritage.

5. Try International Food At The Marktplatz

The Marktplatz in Basel is a lively square in the city’s old town, with food vendors everywhere offering tasty treats.

It’s open late, making it a great spot to grab a bite and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

We tried the Instanbul Pizza, which had Mediterranean spices and a slice of Baklava! We stopped here after enjoying the cocktails at Hinz & Kunz.
