During my trip to Basel, Switzerland, I couldn’t resist trying one of the city’s most famous treats—Basler Läckerli. Known for its sweet and nutty flavor, this traditional Swiss delicacy is a must-try for anyone visiting Basel. I decided to make a stop at Jakob’s Basler Läckerli, one of the oldest and most popular shops in the city, to experience the treat for myself. Here’s a little bit about what I discovered.
Jakob’s Basler
The History Behind Basler Läckerli
Basler Läckerli has a history that dates back to the 18th century, and Jakob’s Basler Läckerli has been perfecting the recipe for generations.
This delicious treat is made from honey, almonds, candied peel, Kirsch (a cherry brandy), and a hint of kirsch.
The recipe was originally created by a local baker named Johann Conrad Doerr, and it quickly became a favorite in Basel.
Today, Jakob’s Basler Läckerli carries on this legacy, making the treats fresh daily using traditional methods.
A Visit to Jakob’s Basler Läckerli Shop
When I walked into Jakob’s Basler Läckerli shop, I was immediately hit with the sweet, warm scent of freshly baked treats.
The shop is cozy and welcoming, with glass cases filled with Läckerli of all sizes.

It’s located in the heart of Basel, not far from the famous Marktplatz, making it easy to pop in while exploring the city.
The staff was friendly and happy to explain the history behind the Läckerli, and they even let me sample a few before I made my purchase.
What Makes Jakob’s Basler Läckerli Special?
Jakob’s Basler Läckerli has a reputation for making some of the best Läckerli in Basel, and after tasting them, I can see why.
The texture is perfectly chewy, and the flavor is a wonderful balance of sweet and nutty, with just a hint of citrus from the candied peel.

What I really loved was the subtle kick of the Kirsch, which adds depth to the overall taste without being overwhelming.
Each bite was a perfect combination of flavors, and I could tell they used only high-quality ingredients.

What also sets Jakob’s Basler Läckerli apart is their attention to detail.
The treats are made using traditional methods, and the shop has a long-standing reputation because of it.
Bring Some Home!
One of the best things about Jakob’s Basler Läckerli is that it makes for an excellent souvenir to bring back home.
We grabbed some during our visit but ate them before we even made it home.
If Basel is your last stop you should definitely plan to fly some back with you.
