There are two things I absolutely love: a hidden cocktail bar and delicious Italian pastries. So, when I found out there’s a hidden gem in Boston’s North End that has both, I knew I had to check it out. This secret spot is tucked away at the famous Modern Pastry. Here’s everything you need to know!
Modern Pastry
Modern Pastry is one of the most iconic pastry shops in Boston, drawing as much attention as Mike’s Pastry.
So when I heard they had a speakeasy, I was intrigued.
Established in 1930 on Hanover Street in Boston’s North End, Modern Pastry has been serving authentic Italian pastries for generations.

Founded by the Picariello family, who emigrated from Italy, the bakery has stayed true to its roots, proudly preserving its heritage.
From multi-tiered cakes to delicate cookies, every creation is crafted with care and joy—and trust me, you can taste it in every bite.
I stopped here on my Self-Guided Food Tour of North End Boston and it did not disappoint!
Now, let’s talk about my visit!
First, Get Some Pastries!
First, we stood in line for about half an hour, eager for the chance to grab a few pastries.

We decided on the classic black-and-white Italian cookie, along with a couple of other treats, like a truffle and pistachio cookie!
We also had to try the Pistachio Macaroons! It was chewy, sweet, and crunchy. Made with pistachio paste with pistachio nuts and powdered sugar.

The cookie was one of the best I’ve ever had—though I’m not surprised. They live up to the hype, and the line proves it.
Modern Pastry Underground
Once we paid for our cookies, we spotted the sign that read “Bar” on the wall, and that is how we found Modern Pastry Underground!

We made our way toward it and descended down a dark staircase, curious about what awaited us.
Once we reached the bottom of the stairs, we were surprised to find a packed bar in a dimly lit room.
There were also a few tables offering lunch entrées and drinks.

We headed straight to the bar to pick a drink from their dessert martini menu.
It was tough to decide because every option looked amazing.
We spent some time here, enjoying some of the best Italian pastries in Boston while sipping on dessert martinis.

The Pistachio and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Martinis were a treat on their own—sweet and creamy!
It is no surprise that I love speakeasies, and this one was such a cool find. Especially if you love desserts!
