During our road trip around Iceland’s Ring Road, we made a stop in the Lake Mývatn area—one of the most surreal regions in the north.
After a morning of hiking volcanic craters and soaking in the Mývatn Nature Baths, we were starving and excited to check out Vogafjós Farm Resort.
Here, you can literally enjoy a delicious farm-fresh meal right next to real cows! Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Vogafjós Cowshed Café in Iceland.
Vogafjós Farm Resort & the Cowshed Café
Vogafjós Farm Resort is a family-run guesthouse and working farm tucked just outside the town of Reykjahlíð in the Lake Mývatn area of North Iceland.
But what makes this place so special isn’t just the cozy cabins or the peaceful location—it’s the Cowshed Café.

The restaurant is built right into the barn, with a big glass window where you can actually see the cows while you eat. It’s warm, rustic, and full of charm.
You’ll spot house-made cheeses, smoked lamb, and local specialties on the menu, all made from ingredients sourced right there on the farm or nearby.

My Experience at the Cowshed Café
We stopped by Vogafjós Cowshed Café without a reservation after hiking the Hverfjall volcano crater and exploring the lava fields nearby.
Luckily, they had a spot for us, and we asked for a table right by the window so we could watch the cows while we ate.

It was such a cozy setup, and honestly, one of the most unique dining experiences we’ve ever had.
We kicked things off with two local Icelandic beers while we decided what to order.

I went with the farm-fresh beef soup, which came with warm Geysir bread and creamy homemade butter.

We also split the burger—and while it felt a little wrong eating beef just feet from the cows, it ended up being the best burger we’ve ever had.

It was topped with their homemade cheese and served with hand-cut fries and a fresh garden salad.

To finish, we had to try the Geysir Bread Ice Cream—a sweet and creamy dessert made with chunks of dark rye bread baked in nearby hot springs.
