I never expected to end my day in Eastern Iceland soaking in a tub full of beer. But that’s exactly what happened at the Blábjörg Resort beer spa in Borgarfjörður Eystri.
If you’re looking for a quirky Icelandic experience, the beer spa at Blábjörg Resort is worth the detour. Here is everything you need to know!
Blábjörg Resort in Borgarfjörður Eystri
I stayed at Blábjörg Resort during my visit to Borgarfjörður Eystri—originally as just an overnight stop while watching puffins.
I had no idea the hotel itself would be such a highlight. We chose it for the location (right in town and close to the puffin cliffs), but it totally blew me away.

Our room was spotless and super comfortable, with simple modern touches that felt cozy after a long travel day.

The best part? The private balcony with ocean views.
Sitting out there while watching the waves crash below was one of my favorite memories of the trip.

If you’re planning a puffin-watching trip to Hafnarhólmi Cliffs, this is the perfect place to stay.

The Beer Spa at Blábjörg Resort
When I was booking my stay, I noticed you could add a Beer Spa experience to your visit, and honestly, I knew I had to do it.
It had been on my bucket list long before I even knew about Borgarfjörður Eystri, and this felt like the perfect opportunity.

The beer baths at Blábjörg Resort are brewed right there in their own KHB brewery, making them a unique, local experience.
According to the spa’s website, the baths are “tailored for relaxation” and rich in “vitamins and antioxidants,” thanks to the oils and minerals in hops and malt.
Here is a look into my experience, from start to finish.
My Personal Experience at the Beer Spa
The spa staff greeted us warmly and gave us a quick rundown of how everything would work.
Before getting into the beer baths, they handed us a small jar of scrub made from beer bits and hops to use in the shower.

The staff told us to exfoliate our skin first so it could better absorb the nutrients during the soak.
Entering The Beer Bath Room
After rinsing off, we spent a few minutes in the sauna to dry off and fully relax before our bath session.

From there, I was taken to my private beer bath room. Only one person is allowed per room, but if you’re visiting as a couple, the other person will be just a few feet away in the next room.
It was a relaxing space with a large wooden tub, dim lighting, and a window overlooking the ocean.
Beer in the Bath—Yes, Please
Each person is allowed one beer during their session, which is included in the price. You can drink it while soaking or save it for afterward.

I chose to enjoy mine in the tub because let’s be honest—if I’m soaking in beer, I want to be sipping it too.
Filling the Tub and Sinking In
When I got into the tub, it was only filled about 25% of the way—and it was piping hot.
They do this on purpose, so you can adjust the temperature to your liking as the bath continues to fill.

The water itself was light green, filled with visible hops floating on the surface.
This is totally normal and part of what makes the beer bath so rich in vitamins and minerals.

Suit or No Suit? What to Expect
You can wear a swimsuit or go without since you’re in a private room, but just a heads up—if you do wear a suit, the green hops can stain lighter fabrics.
I eased into the hot water and sat back as the tub slowly filled around me.

The sound of water trickling, the faint scent of hops, and the view of the ocean right outside the window made it feel like a scene from a dream.
I even watched seabirds fly past as I sipped my cold beer from the resort’s own brewery.
Soaking in Beer
I spent about 35 minutes soaking, using the rest of the scrub to gently exfoliate for a true spa treatment.

Five minutes before the end of our session, a staff member knocked to let us know it was time to wrap up.
I wiped away the leftover bits of hops, threw on my robe, and headed to the relaxation room.
Post-Bath Relaxation Room
This room was honestly the cherry on top. There were full-size beds with soft blankets and warm lighting.

You enjoy another drink in here and just completely melt into the space.
Tips for Visiting the Beer Spa at Blábjörg Resort
Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your beer spa experience at Blábjörg Resort.
Book in advance.
Sessions fill up quickly, especially in summer, so be sure to reserve your spot ahead of time online.
Booking early also confirms that the spa team has time to prepare your beer bath.
Don’t Shower After
One important tip: don’t shower right away.
The staff recommends letting the beer, hops, and minerals sit on your skin for a few hours so you can absorb all the benefits.
My skin felt incredibly soft afterward, and I’m glad I followed their advice.
Access the Musteri Spa
Included in your session is access to the Musteri Spa!
Give yourself time to enjoy the hot tubs and ocean views before or after your beer bath—it’s the perfect way to make the most of your visit.
Stay Hydrated!
Enjoy the beer, but make sure to drink water too. Soaking in warm water can be dehydrating, especially if you’re sipping alcohol.
The spa provides ice-cold water in the relaxation room, so be sure to take advantage of it during and after your session.
