Paris is known as the most romantic city in the world, and one of the best ways to celebrate love is by adding a love lock to the city’s landmarks. In this guide, we’ll explore the best spots to place your love lock in Paris and help you avoid areas where it’s not allowed.
Love Locks In Paris In 2026
First, let’s go over what a love lock is. A love lock is a small padlock that couples attach to a bridge in Paris or another structure as a symbol of their love and commitment.
What Is A Love Lock?
Many engrave or write their names on the lock before securing it and saving the key as a memory. Some even throw it into the river below, however, that is only allowed in some places.

This tradition started in various cities around the world and has become especially popular in Paris.
People do it to celebrate their relationship and their memory in Paris. Many believe it is a way to forever lock your love in place, just like the padlock.
Where To Put Love Locks In Paris
Due to structural damage, many places in Paris now ban the use of love locks. However, during my recent visit in 2024, two places still allowed it. Here they are!
1. Jardins du Trocadér
One of the best places to put your love lock in Paris is at the Jardins du Trocadéro. The park at Place du Trocadéro is a stunning green space that offers some of the best views of the Eiffel Tower.
Conveniently located on the right bank of the Seine, directly across from the iconic landmark.
We walked here from our hotel near the Eiffel Tower.

Keep walking to the fence, and you will see thousands of love locks in front of you.
This is where we locked our love lock! The location and the view are truly unbeatable.
2. Sacré-Cœur
The second place I saw locks in Paris was in Montmarte, Paris’s art district at Sacré-Cœur.
The basilica is located on the Montmartre hill at the highest point in Paris.

This iconic church is famous for its striking white-domed architecture and its panoramic views of the city.

If you walk down to the railing near the steps, you’ll see the endless amounts of love locks covering the area!

FAQS
Can I Put Love Locks On Pont de l’Archevêché Bridge?
As of May 2024, the love locks were all gone from the bridge that connects the Institut de France with the central square of the Louvre Palace.
Visitors are forbidden from placing love locks on the Pont des Arts due to the weight of over a million locks causing structural issues.
To give you an idea, in 2015, the city said the locks weighed 45 tons, which is equivalent to 20 elephants!

What happened to the love locks that were removed from the Pont des Arts?
In 2015, the love locks on Pont des Arts were removed because their combined weight was damaging the bridge.
The locks were taken down and auctioned off, with proceeds going to charity. The bridge has since been fitted with glass panels to prevent the attachment of more locks.
Respect Paris’ Love Lock Laws
While locking your love is a fun activity, it’s not always allowed. Paris is a very historic city with many old buildings, heritage sites, and famous bridges.
Therefore, it’s important to respect the rules for each area.
For example, if there are signs advising against love locks, don’t place yours there. Instead, consider going to locations where it is permitted.
Are there any alternatives to placing a love lock in Paris?
Yes, if you want to celebrate your love differently, consider visiting the Wall of Love (Le Mur des Je t’aime) in Montmartre.
This wall features “I love you” written in hundreds of languages and is a romantic spot for couples.
You can also explore other romantic activities like a Seine River cruise or a visit to the Eiffel Tower.
