Quebec City is one of the most charming places I’ve ever explored. From wandering through Old Quebec to tasting classic Quebec dishes, the city offers something memorable at every turn. Here are the best things to do in Quebec City, including a few day trips that are worth the journey.

32 Top Things to Do in Quebec City

Here is a look at 32 things to do in Quebec City, which includes a few of my favorite day trips!

1. Marvel at Château Frontenac

The first time I walked through Old Quebec, I couldn’t take my eyes off the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.

It towers over the Saint Lawrence River like a fairytale castle, and it’s easy to see why it’s called the most photographed hotel in the world.

A fairytale view of Château Frontenac, the world’s most photographed hotel.

I was lucky enough to stay the night last winter, and it felt as historic as it looks.

It’s one of those top attractions in Quebec City that feels magical no matter how many times you see it.

2. Walk the Dufferin Terrace Boardwalk

Right in front of Château Frontenac, I followed the wooden planks of the Dufferin Terrace boardwalk. I instantly understood why it’s such a highlight of Old Quebec.

The views stretch across the Saint Lawrence River and down to the Lower Town, and in the summer, there are street performers adding energy to the stroll.

Whether warm or cold, walking here is one of the best things to do in Quebec City.

3. Step Back in Time at Place Royale

Walking into Place Royale felt like stepping into another century.

In fact, this little square in Old Quebec is surrounded by 17th-century stone buildings and cobblestone streets.

It’s often called the birthplace of French America.

The star of the square is Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, the oldest stone church in North America.

I loved pausing here and just imagining what life would have been like hundreds of years ago.

Most importantly, it reminded me of the city’s deep history.

4. Take Photos at Umbrella Alley

One of the most colorful spots I found in Old Quebec’s Petit Champlain district was Umbrella Alley.

Dozens of bright umbrellas hang above the street, making it a colorful backdrop between the boutiques and cafes.

Bright umbrellas overhead make Umbrella Alley one of the quirkiest spots in the city.

I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos here (and honestly, neither could anyone else walking by).

If you’re wondering what to do in Quebec City in summer, strolling through Umbrella Alley is it!

It’s quick to visit, but it’s quirky, fun, and one of the most unique Quebec City attractions for first-time visitors.

5. Explore La Citadelle de Québec

Standing on the ramparts of La Citadelle de Québec, I felt like I had stepped into living history.

This star-shaped fortress has been guarding the city for over 300 years, and it’s still an active military base today.

If you visit in summer, you can even catch the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony. This is one of the most unique traditions in Quebec City.

6. Ride the Quebec City Funicular 🚠

The first time I saw the Quebec City Funicular, I knew I had to try it.

This little glass-walled elevator connects Upper Town with the Lower Town, gliding up the cliffside between Dufferin Terrace and Petit Champlain.

Riding the funicular is a quick and fun way to see Old Quebec from above.

The ride is short, but the views of Old Quebec and the Saint Lawrence River are unforgettable.

At around $4, it’s one of the most fun and budget-friendly things to do in Quebec City.

And it saves you the climb up (or down!) breakneck stairs.

7. Walk Through the Plains of Abraham

Right next to the Citadelle are the Plains of Abraham, a massive green space where one of the most important battles in Canadian history was fought in 1759.

Today, it feels more like a peaceful city park than a battlefield, with trails, open lawns, and incredible views of Old Quebec.

I went for a stroll here and loved how quiet it felt compared to the busy streets nearby. It almost felt like a completely different city.

8. Visit Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral

Walking inside the Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral was one of those quiet, awe-inspiring moments.

Built in 1647, it has been destroyed by fire twice but always rebuilt, and today it’s filled with golden details, stained glass, and a peaceful atmosphere.

I lit a candle and took a moment just to really take in the stunning architecture of this church.

Whether you’re religious or not, this is one of the most beautiful Quebec City landmarks, and it’s right in the heart of Old Quebec.

9. Dine at Quebec City’s Best Restaurants

One of the things that made me fall in love with Quebec City was its food scene.

From French bistros tucked into Old Quebec to fine dining with views of the Saint Lawrence River, the city has something for every craving.

I tried everything from poutine to fresh seafood, and each meal felt like part of the adventure.

10. Take a Day Trip to Montmorency Falls

If you want to take a day trip from Quebec City, visit Montmorency Falls.

I visited Montmorency Falls this summer, and I couldn’t believe how huge it was. Even taller than Niagara Falls!

Just a 15-minute drive from Quebec City, this waterfall is one of the most popular day trips from the city.

You can take a cable car up for sweeping views of the falls or walk across the suspension bridge at the top.

Hike around the park, take the zipline, or just admire the views. For that reason, visiting Montmorency Falls is one of the most popular day trips from Quebec City.

11. Explore Canyon Sainte-Anne

I also heard that exploring Canyon Sainte-Anne is another fun spot!

I have not been there yet, but it has three suspension bridges crossing over a dramatic canyon.

If you want something unique that’s still close to the city, this is one of the best Quebec City day trips. And you can combine it with Montmorency Falls!

12. Sip Wine in Île d’Orléans

A short drive from the city is Île d’Orléans, which makes a perfect escape into the countryside.

We spent an afternoon driving around the island and stopping at cider houses, wineries, and farm stands.

We tried a few different tastings and even black currant ice cream!

You have to visit the Best Sunset Winery, Vignoble Isle de Bacchus!

In particular, Île d’Orléans is known for its strawberries, apples, and maple products.

If you love local flavors, Île d’Orléans is a must-do. It’s one of the most delicious things to do near Quebec City.

13. See the Fresque des Québécois Mural

While wandering through Old Quebec, I turned a corner and came face-to-face with the massive Fresque des Québécois mural.

Covering the side of a building, it tells the story of Quebec’s history through lifelike figures. From explorers and historical leaders to everyday citizens.

I loved standing there and picking out all the little details, almost like a giant “Where’s Waldo” of Quebec’s past and present.

It’s quick, free, and one of the most photogenic stops in the city.

14. Take the Quebec–Lévis Ferry at Sunset

One of the most magical experiences I had in Quebec City was taking the ferry across the Saint Lawrence River to Lévis.

The ride is quick and inexpensive, but the views are unforgettable, especially at sunset.

Sunset on the Quebec–Lévis Ferry is like watching the city glow from the water.

Whether you’re commuting, exploring Lévis, or just looking for a romantic way to end the day, the sunset ferry is one of the best hidden gems in Quebec City.

15. Get a Sky-High Drink at Clubby Bar

One evening, we discovered the hidden gem that is Clubby Bar, tucked on the sixth floor of Le Capitole Hotel.

We snagged a seat on the private balcony and watched the city unfold across Quebec City! With a Quebec gin in hand.

Whether you’re settling in for sunset or toasting a special moment, it’s one of the most memorable Quebec City attractions, and it’s new to the scene!

16. Escape to Jacques-Cartier National Park

About a 30-minute drive from Quebec City, I spent a day exploring Parc National de la Jacques-Cartier. It felt like stepping into pure wilderness.

I tried the Éperon Trail for an easy walk with views and loved stopping at little pull-offs along the road just to admire the scenery.

Whether you canoe in summer, hike in the fall, or snowshoe in winter, this park is one of the best day trips from Quebec City for nature lovers.

17. Visit Quebec City’s Hidden Speakeasies 🍸

One of my favorite surprises in Quebec City was discovering its hidden speakeasy scene.

I made it my mission to find the city’s most secret bars over the past year.

I tried spots like JJacques, Vieux Carré, and Justine, and each one felt like stepping into another world.

If you love cocktails and a bit of mystery, checking out the speakeasies is a must-do.

18. Experience the Ice Hotel (Hôtel de Glace)

Quebec City has one of the most unique hotels in the world — the Hôtel de Glace, also known as the Ice Hotel.

Open from January to March, the entire hotel is built from ice and snow, including the bar, the chapel, and even the drinking glasses.

I didn’t stay overnight, but I booked a ticket to explore the inside and was amazed by the ice sculptures, themed suites, and frozen chandeliers.

Whether you just visit for the day or brave an overnight stay, it’s one of the most unforgettable Quebec City attractions in winter.

19. Celebrate Summer Festivals & Events

Summer in Quebec City comes alive with the Quebec City Summer Festival, where international music acts take over the city.

The season also brings Grands Feux Loto-Québec, a festive fireworks series over the St. Lawrence River.

The energy is unmatched, making summer one of the most exciting times to visit Quebec City.

20. Stroll Through Artists’ Alley

Located in the heart of Old Quebec, Rue du Trésor, also known as Artists’ Alley.

Local artists line the narrow street with paintings, sketches, and prints, creating a colorful display between the stone walls.

Whether you buy something or just enjoy the atmosphere, Artists’ Alley is one of the most charming spots in Quebec City.

Fair warning, though, it gets very busy here!

21. Shop and Dine on Rue Saint-Jean

One of my favorite streets to explore in Quebec City was Rue Saint-Jean, a lively stretch filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants.

It’s a mix of local boutiques, bakeries, and tasty eateries, and I loved just wandering and popping into whatever caught my eye.

At night, the street comes alive with bars and live music, giving it a completely different energy.

If you’re looking for a place that combines shopping, dining, and nightlife all in one, Rue Saint-Jean is the spot.

22. Step Inside the Morrin Centre

The Morrin Centre was one of the most unexpected stops of my trip.

Originally a prison, it later became Quebec City’s first English-language college and now houses a beautiful Victorian library.

Walking through the old book stacks and learning about the building’s history was fascinating.

If you love history with a twist, this is one of the most unique Quebec City attractions.

There is a small fee to enter, and you can even take a guided tour.

23. Visit the Musée de la Civilisation

I always like to balance outdoor exploring with a good museum, and the Musée de la Civilisation was the perfect choice in Quebec City.

The exhibits cover everything from Indigenous cultures of Quebec to modern art installations, and the design of the museum itself is striking.

24. Try Classic Poutine at Chez Ashton

No trip to Quebec City is complete without trying poutine, Quebec’s signature dish made of fries, gravy, and cheese curds.

While you’ll find it all over the city, I stopped at Chez Ashton, a local chain that’s been serving poutine since the 1960s.

Nothing beats classic poutine from Chez Ashton, a true Quebec staple.

The location near Rue Saint-Jean was perfect for grabbing a late-night bite, and the portions were huge.

I recommend the classic! It was crispy, gooey, and packed with savory flavor.

25. Leave Old Quebec &Explore Beyond the Walls

As beautiful as Old Quebec is, some of my favorite discoveries came when I wandered beyond the historic streets.

On Rue Saint-Jean-Baptiste, I found a more local vibe, with colorful houses, independent shops.

And one of my sweetest stops in the city, Érico Chocolaterie Pâtisserie! A chocolate shop that serves delicious ice cream.

I also spent time in the Saint-Roch neighborhood, which has a trendier, more modern feel.

I went here for Quebec City’s Pop-Up Christmas Bar!

26. Visit Polar Bears at the Aquarium du Québec

Just a short drive from Old Quebec, the Aquarium du Québec is home to over 10,000 marine animals.

But the stars of the show are definitely the polar bears.

Watching them swim and play up close was an unforgettable experience, and it’s one of the few places in the world where you can see these incredible animals in such a natural-looking habitat.

The aquarium also has walruses, seals, and interactive exhibits that make it fun for both kids and adults.

27. Try Your Luck at Casino de Québec

For a night of entertainment beyond the cobblestone streets, head to the Casino de Québec, located just a short drive from Old Quebec.

Inside, you’ll find slot machines, table games, and lively bars, along with live music and events on certain nights. I popped in for a few games and loved how it offered a completely different vibe from the historic city center.

Whether you play the tables or just enjoy the atmosphere, the casino is a fun way to switch things up during your stay in Quebec City.

28. Visit the German Christmas Market

If you’re visiting Quebec City in late fall or early winter, you’re in for a treat!

The German Christmas Market transforms Old Quebec into a holiday wonderland. Wooden stalls line the streets selling mulled wine, gingerbread, and handmade gifts.

I loved wandering from booth to booth with a warm drink in hand, taking in the smells of roasted nuts and fresh pastries.

You have to try 1001 Foundues: A Culinary Star at Quebec’s German Christmas Market!

It’s the perfect way to kick off the holiday season, and it’s one of the best things to do in Quebec City in November and December.

29. Catch a Concert at L’Agora

If you want to see a concert, check out who’s playing at L’Agora, an outdoor amphitheater nestled along the Saint Lawrence River.

It’s part of the Port of Québec, and the stage setting is anything but ordinary.

I happened to catch a show there during my visit, and it felt magical.

30. Try Maple Taffy on Snow

One of the sweetest traditions in Quebec is maple taffy on snow (tire d’érable)!

And the best place to try it in Old Quebec is La Petite Cabane à Sucre de Québec.

Here, hot maple syrup is poured over fresh snow and rolled onto a stick, turning it into a chewy maple candy.

I stopped by during my visit, and it was such a fun (and delicious) experience. The kind of treat you can only get in Quebec.

31. Relax at Strøm Spa Nordique

After a few busy days exploring Quebec City, I spent an afternoon unwinding at Strøm Spa Nordique. Which is just a five-minute drive from Old Quebec.

Set right on the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, it felt like an escape into calm without ever leaving the city.

The outdoor pools, saunas, and relaxation areas overlook the water, and I loved moving between the hot and cold baths while watching the river flow by.

I have visited here both in the winter with snow all around and in summer with sailboats in the river.

Strøm Spa is the perfect way to recharge during your trip anytime of the year!

32. Bonus: Glamp at Repère Boréal in Charlevoix

While it’s not in Quebec City itself, I spent a few nights glamping at Repère Boréal in Charlevoix last winter!

Instead of a hotel, I stayed in a modern shipping container!

If you’re looking to extend your adventure just outside Quebec City, I can’t recommend this spot enough.
