During my trip to Halifax, I did a lot of amazing things, but the Sunset Wine & Cheese Sail with J Farwell stood out. We slipped into the harbour at golden hour, tasted local Nova Scotia wines with a cheese board, and learned a bit of history as the sun set. Here is my honest look at the tour and what to expect.

My Experience Taking the J Farwell Sunset Wine & Cheese Sail

It was a warm September evening, and I only needed a light hoodie for the whole trip.

The Boat and Seating

This was the smallest sailboat I have ever been on, and let me tell you, it was perfect.

The boat felt intimate and relaxed with about ten people total, including the captain and crew.

There are two small couches and extra seating along the sides, so it didn’t feel too cramped.

Once we were underway, we could walk to the front of the boat for the best breeze and photos.

The Wine and Cheese Tasting

The wine tasting includes four Nova Scotia wines poured one by one.

Think a crisp white to start, a sparkling bubbly, a rosé, and a smooth red from local wineries.

A shared cheeseboard sits in the middle so you can snack while you sail.

As our first pour was served, we slipped out into the harbour and the city started to fall away.

We cruised past small sailboats and quiet coves, then along the shoreline lined with impressive homes.

The crew shared stories about the celebrities and billionaires who lives there.

And a bit of history about the older properties and the Northwest Arm.

Sunset Views

As the second glass was poured, the light turned golden and the water went glassy.

We sailed toward the end of the arm and then made our way back toward Halifax.

The sun dropped behind the houses, and the whole harbour glowed.

Night settled in, and the skyline lights came on, which was such a pretty view from the water.

I even spotted a few early stars from the bow.

I loved this experience because it felt calm and personal with a small group and a smaller boat.

It had a quiet luxury feel without any fuss, just good wine, a friendly crew, and an easy route that shows off Halifax at its best.
