Most people visit Camden Hills State Park in the summer or fall, but let me tell you—winter is seriously underrated.
The trail up Mt. Battie isn’t long, just about a mile, but in the snow, it’s a whole different kind of adventure.
I laced up my boots, strapped on my microspikes, and hit the trail. Here is your Mt. Battie winter hiking guide!
Mount Battie in Winter
Mt. Battie in Camden Hills State Park is a stunning destination for winter hiking.

The Carriage Road Trail is an excellent choice for a peaceful, wintery hike with beautiful views of Penobscot Bay and Camden Harbor.
In winter, the area is less crowded, offering a serene experience amidst snow-covered trees and crisp, fresh air.
Taking the Old Carriage Road Trail
- Distance: 2.4-mile out-and-back trail
- Elevation Gain: 564 feet
- Trail Type: Gradual incline, shared with snowmobiles
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate depending on snow and ice
- Trail Map: Use this Alltrails Map.
The Old Carriage Road Trail is a great alternative to the steeper Mt. Battie Trail. It’s wide, gentle, and offers an enjoyable climb up the mountain with fewer icy spots.

The trail is popular for both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
I love hiking Maine in winter and disappearing into the snowy landscapes.

Guide to Hiking Mt Battie in Winter
Begin your hike at the main entrance of Camden Hills State Park.
You’ll find the Carriage Road Trailhead clearly marked, with plenty of parking nearby.
The trail is well-maintained and offers easy access, making it a great option for winter hikes.
Follow the Snowy Trail
Once you start, the trail will be packed down from previous hikers, making it relatively easy to follow.

You’ll be surrounded by trees covered in snow, and the trail winds through a peaceful, winter forest.
Hike Your Way Up!
The trail has a gentle incline, unlike the steeper Mt. Battie Trail, making it more manageable in winter conditions.

The trail gradually climbs up, with occasional glimpses of the bay and surrounding landscapes as you gain elevation.

Follow The Signs
An easy way to make sure you are still on the trail is to follow the purple hearts that are on the trees along your journey!
It can be easy to lose track of the trail in the snow.

Reach the Summit and the Stone Tower
At the top of the trail, you’ll be greeted by the historic stone tower, built in 1921 as a World War I memorial.

Once you reach the tower you can take the spiral staircase up to the top! Be careful on the steps they can be icy, especially in the heart of winter.

The tower offers stunning 360-degree views, including snow-covered landscapes and the nearby bay.
