Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

If you’re visiting Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of the best day trips you can take is to Peggy’s Cove. Just a 45-minute drive from the city, this tiny fishing village is home to one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world. I made the drive myself and quickly saw why Peggy’s Cove is a must-visit destination on Canada’s East Coast.

Driving from Halifax to Peggy’s Cove

Getting to Peggy’s Cove is simple. The drive takes about 45 minutes along scenic coastal roads, passing through small villages and stretches of open water views.

It makes for an easy morning or afternoon outing, and you can comfortably spend a few hours exploring before heading back to Halifax.

The Famous Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse

The main attraction is Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, a striking red-and-white beacon that stands tall on smooth granite rocks.

It’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Nova Scotia and a popular spot for photos.

I loved lying out on the rocks and soaking up the sun!

The rocks are fun to climb around, but it’s important to stay safe and avoid the wet, dark areas where waves can crash unexpectedly.

Sadly, there have been deaths at Peggy’s Cove due to slips and powerful waves, so be careful with every step, avoid wet, dark rocks, and follow the posted signs.

Exploring the Fishing Village

Beyond the lighthouse, Peggy’s Cove has plenty of charm.

The fishing village features colorful houses, small art galleries, and working boats docked in the harbor.

Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time, with traditional homes and salty sea air reminding you that this is still a real fishing community.

Things to Do at Peggy’s Cove

  • Take photos at the lighthouse: The views are spectacular in every direction.
  • Walk the rocks: Enjoy the natural setting, but stick to the dry areas for safety.
  • Explore local shops and galleries: You’ll find local art, crafts, and souvenirs.
  • Grab a lobster roll: We arrived late in the day, so I couldn’t get one. But I recommend Tom’s Lobster Shack!

Tips for Visiting

  • Best time to go: Early morning or later in the evening for fewer crowds and softer light for photography.
  • Parking: There’s a parking lot near the lighthouse that makes access easy.
  • Weather: Be prepared for wind and changing conditions along the coast.
