Yellowstone National Park is one of the most incredible places I’ve ever visited, and the Grand Prismatic Spring was a highlight I’ll never forget.
Standing in front of its rainbow colors and massive size, I understood right away why it’s one of the park’s most iconic stops.
The Grand Prismatic
Seeing the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone in person was unforgettable.
The water glowed in brilliant shades of blue and green, surrounded by fiery rings of yellow, orange, and red.
I learned that these vivid colors actually come from heat-loving bacteria that thrive in the different temperatures of the hot spring.
The Grand Prismatic is the largest hot spring in Yellowstone National Park, and while the park is filled with geysers, hot springs, and mud pots, this one truly stands out as the most colorful and surreal.
How Deep is the Grand Prismatic?
So, how deep is the Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone’s largest hot spring?
Standing at nearly 370 feet (112 meters) across and plunging down about 160 feet (49 meters), its size is just as impressive as its colors.
That depth creates a unique ecosystem that makes the spring even more fascinating to see in person — it’s truly one of Yellowstone’s most remarkable sights.
The Grand Prismatic Viewing Area
Visitors can view The Grand Prismatic Spring from a boardwalk that provides a safe vantage point.
The boardwalk allows visitors to observe the stunning colors and intricate patterns while protecting the delicate ecosystem around the spring.

Walking the entire boardwalk takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. It can be very busy here, especially during the tourist season.
But take your time and enjoy the views during the entire 1.5-mile journey!
The Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook Trail
For a more unique view, hike the Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook Trail!
This hike is beautiful and will allow you to view the spring from above.
The trail is 1.81 miles long and has an elevation gain of 233 feet. It isn’t a difficult hike, but it will get your heart pumping!

We did both the boardwalk and the overlook during our visit, which was around 3.5 miles. Note that the trail is open from late May until the Fall.
Swimming Not Allowed!
Whatever you do, don’t try to swim in the Grand Prismatic Spring! The water at the center is nearly boiling at around 199°F (93°C), with cooler edges that create the unique temperature gradients responsible for its vivid colors.
And please — don’t be that tourist. The Grand Prismatic may be a hot spring, but it’s not one you can soak in. Sadly, there have been fatal accidents from people ignoring the rules.
One visitor even tried to cook a raw chicken in the spring, which earned them a hefty fine and a lifetime ban from the park.

The best way to experience the Grand Prismatic is by taking in its colors from the boardwalk or overlook. Respecting the guidelines keeps both visitors and this incredible natural wonder safe.
How To Get To The Grand Prismatic
The Grand Prismatic Spring is located off Yellowstone’s main loop road, just south of Midway Geyser Basin.
Cell service can be unreliable, so use the park map to find it. The parking area is well-marked and usually busy, making this famous hot spring easy to spot.
