South Dakota may not be the first place travelers think of, but it’s full of surprises. Beyond the highways and prairies are mountains, giant rock formations, and one of the longest caves in the world—Wind Cave National Park. Keep reading to see my favorite things to do here!
Wind Cave National Park
In the southwestern corner of South Dakota is one of the most complex cave systems, Wind Cave National Park.
Wind Cave is one hundred and fifty miles long. Sitting at 500 feet below the ground! It has quickly become a top South Dakota attraction.

To this day, only five percent of the cave has been discovered by geologists. Leaving most of it uncharted territory.
Despite the name, the cave is not the only stop at this national park. Keep reading to find out the top three attractions at Wind Cave National Park.
Best Things To Do In Wind Cave National Park
1. Cave Exploration
Taking one of the Cave Tours is the only way you are allowed to access it. Due to safety reasons, a ranger will provide a tour.
They will teach you all about this underground wonder as well as go over the science behind the cave.

During the tour, you will be climbing staircases that can be wet and slippery. Make sure to wear proper shoes with good traction.
The temperature underground averages around fifty degrees, so bring your jacket.
There are three tours available at three different time slots throughout the day.
Tickets cannot be purchased in advance at this time. At $12 per person, they do sell out relatively fast. It is recommended to get there early to reserve your spot.

The cave is an absolute wonder and a must-see while you are visiting!
2. Bison Watching
Driving into the park along Highway 35, you will begin to see wildlife in the grassland.
You may even get stuck in a very common “bison jam”. Bison roam freely within the park and along the park roads. They even have their own area called the Bison Lands.

You can see them grazing in the distance or even crossing right in front of your car. Bison are very large and unpredictable animals.
It is recommended to stay at least twenty-five feet away from them at all times.
Even though they can be a bit intimidating, they are beautiful animals for wildlife watching. If you can’t get a reservation at the cave, Bison Watching is a great alternative.

In addition to Bison, there are other animals in the park. Elk are known to come out in the evening hours.
Prairie Dogs populate the areas along the park roads. The view over the open prairie allows you to see all of the different animals in the distance.
Making this park an ideal vacation spot for wildlife enthusiasts.
3. Hiking The Prairie
This national park has a few stunning hiking trails.
The most popular are Lookout Point Trail and Centennial Trail Loop, also known as Trail #6. This is a 5.3 trail that loops you through the whole park.
You will start at the parking lot and hike down through the prairie.
Allowing you to see all of the prairie dogs’ homes throughout the trek. These little critters make loud noises, resembling a squeaky toy when you walk by.

Alerting all of their friends that you are entering their land.
They are quick and may run in front of you as you are hiking. Normally, they are friendly and curious animals that make entertaining hiking companions.

This hike takes about two to three hours. A beautiful way to spend your morning. Relax and enjoy your views of the river and prairie.
Wind Cave National Park Hiking Tips
Stay mindful and alert during your time hiking. As I already mentioned, Bison roam freely in this area.
I actually came face-to-face with one by accident while turning a corner. They normally remain peaceful if you keep your distance.
