If you’re looking for a fall hike in Acadia National Park, Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail is one of the best options.
This trail features a combination of scenic views, challenging sections, and the opportunity to experience Acadia’s beautiful autumn foliage.
This is hands down my favorite fall hike in Acadia National Park —here’s everything you need to know!
Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail
The Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail is approximately 2.9 miles long, with an elevation gain of 1,154 feet.
I would rate it as a moderate to strenuous hike. The trail features a series of ladders and rocky sections that provide an adventurous twist to the experience.
Where To Park
You can park at the Dorr Mountain Trailhead along Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park.
There’s a designated parking area available, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak fall foliage season.
The Start of Dorr Mountain Trail
Starting from the Dorr Mountain Trailhead, the hike takes you through a beautiful forest.
When I went, the leaves were a few weeks past peak, which provided the best fall vibes.

The trail is well-marked, but it can be rocky and steep in sections. Good hiking shoes are essential to navigate the terrain safely.
Be prepared for some elevation gain as you make your way to the summit.

The Ladder Section
The ladder sections on the trail are nothing like the ones at Beehive, which I was very happy about.
They are made of sturdy wooden rungs with no steep drop-offs. These ladders add an element of adventure to the hike.

The Summit At Dorr Mountain
After climbing the ladders and rocks, we made our way to the top! You can climb around the rocks to get different vantage points. It was windy up there!

One of the main highlights of this hike is the breathtaking views from the summit.
At 1,270 feet, Dorr Mountain provides expansive vistas of Bar Harbor, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding islands, especially vibrant during the fall season when the leaves change color.

The Best Time to Go
Fall is an ideal time to hike Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail, typically from late September to mid-October, when the foliage reaches its peak.
It’s truly the best fall hike in Acadia National Park, offering cooler temperatures and vibrant colors that enhance the experience.
Tips for Hiking Dorr Mountain Ladder Trail
- Start Early: To avoid crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience, consider starting your hike early in the morning. This also allows you to take advantage of the softer morning light for photography.
- Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up during the hike. A heavy jacket can also be useful, as temperatures can drop, especially at higher elevations.
- Take Your Time: Allow yourself time to stop and enjoy the views along the way. The summit is a great place to rest, have a snack, and soak in the scenery before heading back down.
