When I want a hike with stunning ocean views, a little history, and some rocky scrambles, the Great Head Trail in Acadia National Park is one of my go-tos.

It’s not a long hike, but it sure packs in a lot of variety, making it a fun adventure for anyone who loves a good mix of nature and stories from the past.

Great Head Trail in Acadia

Trail Overview

The Great Head Trail is located near Sand Beach, which is one of the best spots in Acadia. This means you can come here for a beach day while also enjoying a hike a few steps away.

The trail offers two main options: a short loop (1.3 miles) for a quick adventure or the full loop (1.9 miles) if you’re ready to explore more.

Along the way, you’ll encounter rocky paths, stunning coastline views, and hidden treasures like the ruins of a 1915 tea house and an old millstone.

The History

What makes this trail unique isn’t just the jaw-dropping scenery—it’s the blend of natural beauty and history.

On your hike, you’ll find the remains of a stone tower once used as a tea house and observatory by the Satterlee family in the early 1900s.

Nearby, you’ll also see a plaque dedicated to David Phillips McKinney, adding a human touch to the trail’s story.

These little details make the Great Head Trail more than just a walk in the woods—it’s a walk through history.

Step By Step Hiking Guide

Now on to the hike! First, let’s talk about Great Head Trail parking. The trail doesn’t have its own designated parking lot. The easiest way to access it is by parking in the Sand Beach parking lot.

From there, simply walk along the beach to reach the start of the Great Head Trail.

The hike isn’t overly challenging, but you’ll want sturdy shoes for the rocky terrain and uneven footing.

From the top of those granite steps, taking a right leads to an open ledge that offers jaw-dropping views of Sand Beach and The Beehive. The trail provides stunning coastal scenery at nearly every turn.

Once you’ve soaked in the views and explored the historic spots, the trail brings you into the forest, providing some shade and a quieter vibe.

If you’re in a rush or just looking for a shorter adventure, there’s an option to cut the loop to 1.3 miles by taking a trail to the left at a marked junction.

It’s a steeper climb but shaves off some distance and loops you back to Sand Beach pretty quickly.

If you want the full 1.9-mile Great Head Trail experience, keep going straight for more coastal views before eventually winding back to where you started.

Whether you choose the shorter or longer route, the Great Head Trail is one of my favorite Acadia National Park Hiking Trails.

It’s the perfect way to spend a couple of hours soaking in the best Acadia has to offer – rugged coastline, ocean breezes, and a touch of history.
