If you told me one of the coolest speakeasies in New York City was hidden above a Five Guys, I’d probably laugh—but then I experienced The Garret, and now I’m the one telling everyone else to go.

This West Village gem blends the thrill of a secret entrance with creative cocktails, laid-back vibes, and even a front-row view of Bleecker Street.

Here is a look at my visit to the Garret, a fun and unique NYC speakeasy!

The Garret: A Hidden Bar Above Five Guys

The Garret is a tucked-away cocktail bar that you’d never expect to find in such a spot. To get there, you walk straight into Five Guys on Bleecker Street.

It feels like you’re about to grab a burger and fries—until you notice a bouncer quietly stationed at the back of the room. That’s your cue. After a quick ID check.

We were pointed toward a staircase and sent upstairs into a cozy, stylish space that felt like someone’s cool city apartment with better lighting and much better drinks.

We were seated in a booth that looked straight out of the Five Guys below (intentional, I’m sure), right by the window.

It turned out to be the perfect spot to people-watch in the West Village while sipping on cocktails.

The Cocktails at The Garret

The drink menu at The Garret is anything but basic. Each cocktail feels like a mini adventure—flavorful, thoughtful, and often playful. Here’s what I tried!

I started with New York is Blue. This one had me at popcorn-washed rum. It’s made with Ron del Barrilito rum, blue curaçao, cream, pineapple juice, and Cracker Jack salt.

Somehow it tasted nostalgic and tropical at the same time—sweet, salty, and fun.

Next, we sipped the 3 AM in K-Town, which had Neversink Apple Gin, Mizu Lemongrass Shochu, Sake, Lychee, Grapefruit, Yuzu, Sesame, Hibiscus

The sesame was the star of this drink!

Lastly, we split a Clear As Day, which had Clarified Fennel Pollen Vodka, Yellow Chartreuse, Suze, Lemon, and Grapefruit.

All of the drinks were really creative and fun!
