Monte’s Fine Foods
First, let’s talk about Monte’s Fine Foods. It’s a specialty grocery store, bakery, and Italian deli located in Portland, known for its high-quality ingredients and locally sourced products.

I felt like a kid in a candy store when I walked into the market. I ended up buying locally made-pasta sauce and dried pasta.
They also had an amazing variety of wines, which pleasantly surprised me. I found a rare bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir that was worth every penny. It paired perfectly with the Italian goodies I bought.

Monte’s offers a range of Italian-inspired goods, including freshly baked bread, pastries, sandwiches, pizzas, and a selection of imported cheeses, meats, and pantry items.

The store has a cozy, neighborhood vibe, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors looking for gourmet foods or a quick, delicious meal.
Now, let’s talk about the pizza!
The Pizza At Monte’s
I had no idea Monte’s existed until I watched the Barstool Pizza Review on YouTube. As soon as I saw that crispy pie, I knew it had to be my next stop. A few days later, I found myself walking into Monte’s to pick up my pizza.
Monte’s is known for serving Roman-style pizza. This style features a thick, airy, and crispy crust that’s rectangular and typically served by the slice. The dough undergoes a longer fermentation process, resulting in a light and flavorful crust. Monte’s offers a variety of toppings, using fresh, high-quality ingredients to create both traditional and creative flavor combinations.

I kept it simple and got their Tomato Pie, which had EVOO, tomato sauce, and oregano. There’s no other way to say it—it was one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve ever had, and I grew up in New Jersey/New York, so my opinion means a lot. The review absolutely lived up to the hype, and it will be our go-to pizza place from now on.
The crust was perfectly charred with small burnt bubbles, and the sauce was out of this world. You can tell they put their heart and soul into it. The olive oil was just an added bonus, and I savored every single bite.
So, is Monte’s the best pizza in Portland, Maine? Yes, 1000% yes it is. In fact, I think it’s the best pizza I’ve had in Maine. If you have the chance to come here, do it. And if you’re a local like me, do it more than once.
