I love tracking down hidden cocktail bars when visiting a new city, and on my three-night trip to Halifax, I set out to find them. Beyond the city’s famous pubs and waterfront are unmarked doors and tucked-away spots serving some of the best cocktails around. Here are the top speakeasies in Halifax and how to find them.

What is a Speakeasy? A Quick History

Speakeasies began during Prohibition in the United States (1920 to 1933), when alcohol was banned and people gathered in secret bars hidden from the law.

The name came from the idea that patrons had to “speak easy” to avoid attention.

Today, the word describes stylish hidden bars that bring back the thrill of finding a secret spot for a drink.

3 Top Speakeasies in Halifax

Here is a look into three Halifax speakeasies that I had the pleasure of sipping at.

1. Noble at The Middle Spoon

📍 Location: Hidden away at The Middle Spoon

This Halifax speakeasy takes the idea of a hidden bar to another level with its weekly password system. Which I will get to in a minute!

First, we made our way into the iconic dessert restaurant The Middle Spoon.

We gave the secret password to the hostess at the front, who let us know that we could start with a drink upstairs while they prepared a table for us.

She let us know that both menus were completely different, too.

The atmosphere upstairs was lively, and we enjoyed one cocktail before being led downstairs to the hidden speakeasy.

As soon as our table was ready, we were brought downstairs through a hallway before we reached the hidden door to Noble.

The space instantly shifted from bright and social to dimly lit and intimate.

We were handed a new cocktail menu with a mix of creative dessert-inspired drinks and elevated classics.

Along with cocktails, Noble also offers a full dinner menu and, of course, desserts.

Noble’s Sticky Toffee Pudding was the perfect sweet pairing to our cocktails at this hidden Halifax speakeasy.

We couldn’t resist ordering the Sticky Toffee Pudding, which melted in our mouths and paired perfectly with the two cocktails we chose.

The drinks here were creative, and they had a lot of dessert-themed choices. Make sure to stop upstairs first before making your way to Noble.

How To Find Noble

A week before our trip, I signed up for Noble’s email list, since that’s the only way to get the secret password you need to enter this hidden speakeasy.

The newsletter link itself is tucked away on The Middle Spoon Desserterie & Bar’s website, which already makes the experience feel like a bit of a treasure hunt.

Have fun trying to find it!

2. The Drawing Room

📍 Location: Above Henry House Pub, Halifax

The Drawing Room is one of Halifax’s best speakeasies, tucked away above the popular Henry House pub.

It only opens on Friday and Saturday nights, which makes it feel even more like a hidden gem.

The space is beautiful, with chandeliers, candlelit tables, and a historic fireplace surrounded by antique furniture.

The menu is just as impressive, highlighting cocktails from different years throughout Prohibition and the cities where they originated.

Kicking off the night with our first cocktails at The Drawing Room, one of Halifax’s hidden speakeasy lounges.

We ordered The Last Word, a Detroit classic made with gin, chartreuse, maraschino, and lime.

I also tried the Twentieth Century Cocktail from London, a mix of gin, Lillet Blanc, crème de cacao, and lemon.

For our second round, we couldn’t resist the Cat’s Pajamas, another London drink made with gin, lemon, orgeat, and honey, served in a charming teacup.

The Drawing Room also offers food from Henry House, so you can pair your speakeasy adventure with a hearty meal if you want to stay a while.

Between the drinks, the history, and the setting, this was easily one of the most memorable cocktail experiences in Halifax.

If you’re searching for classic Halifax hidden bars, The Drawing Room is a must.

How To Find The Drawing Room

To find it, you enter through Henry House’s main doors and look for the large staircase that leads you upstairs.

At the top, the atmosphere shifts completely from cozy pub to secret, high-end cocktail lounge.

3. BKS Speakeasy

📍 Location: Inside the Muir Hotel, Halifax Waterfront

BKS is a little different from the other Halifax speakeasies because it’s only accessible to guests of the Muir Hotel.

This exclusive speakeasy in Halifax delivers some of the city’s most creative cocktails with unbeatable views.

Walking inside feels like stepping into another world. The shift from sleek hotel hallways to a dimly lit lounge is immediate.

The room is filled with plush couches, low lighting, and speakeasy charm.

Plus, an outdoor deck that offers some of the best views of the harbor and city skyline.

The drinks here were among the best of the entire trip.

They were not only creative but also presented with a story, so you understood the inspiration behind each sip.

My first choice was the Red Skye, made with tequila, mezcal, red wine, Chambord, hawthorn, citric acid, and shimmer — yes, it sparkled.

We also ordered the Blomidon Blue, a mix of blueberry, Chartreuse, vodka, coriander, thyme, and cava.

I had to sip the Strawberry Sky too, which was different from the Red Skye, but equally delicious!

Another standout was The Great Potato Battle, a bold cocktail made with Canadian rye, amaro, sweet potato shrub, smoked maple, lemon, egg white, aromatized sage, and black walnut bitters.

The creativity here went above and beyond, and out of all three speakeasies, BKS was my favorite.
