There are so many festive things to do in London at Christmas, and ice skating at Somerset House is easily one of the most magical. The giant tree, the winter lights, the music, the courtyard, it all comes together the moment you walk inside. It feels like classic Christmas in London, and it is the perfect way to spend an hour during the holiday season.
What Is Somerset House?
Somerset House is a beautiful historic building in central London, just steps from Covent Garden and the Strand.
It is one of the city’s most photographed places in December thanks to the Somerset House Ice Rink.
Which transforms the courtyard into one of the best London Christmas activities every year.
Built in the late 1700s, it has been home to royal societies, government offices, and today serves as a major cultural space filled with art, performances, and its famous winter skating.
A Little History of Somerset House
The site was designed by Sir William Chambers and took almost twenty years to complete.
Through the centuries, Somerset House once held the Navy Board, the Royal Academy, and the Registry of Births, Marriages, and Deaths.

The courtyard that now becomes the Somerset House Winter Ice Rink was originally used for processions and major events.
Today, it’s one of the most iconic places to experience Christmas in London.
My Experience Ice Skating at Somerset House
We arrived right before our session, and the security guard scanned our tickets at the entrance.
Once you step inside the courtyard, you make your way to the skate rental area.
They take your shoes and hold them until the end, which makes everything easy!

You get a full hour on the ice, which sounds long but goes by fast.
Skating around the rink with the Christmas tree in the center and the historic building towering around you feels like something out of a holiday movie.

It’s lively without feeling chaotic, and the views in every direction are beautiful.
It really does feel like one of the best ice skating experiences in London.
