I did so many amazing things while visiting London, but one experience that really stood out was walking across the Tower Bridge glass walkway. Stepping onto the glass floor inside the Exhibition and looking straight down at the Thames was equal parts exciting and nerve-racking, and unlike anything else I did in the city. Read on to learn more!
The History of Tower Bridge in London
Before walking across the Tower Bridge glass walkway, it helps to understand why this landmark exists in the first place.
Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 during a time when London needed a new crossing over the River Thames that would not block ships heading to the busy docks downstream.

Instead of building a traditional bridge, engineers designed a bascule bridge that could lift open, allowing large vessels to pass through.
The bridge quickly became an important part of London’s infrastructure, connecting the north and south sides of the city while still supporting river traffic.

Its distinctive Victorian Gothic towers were designed to blend in with the nearby Tower of London.
This helped the bridge feel like a natural extension of the historic skyline rather than a modern disruption.

Walking Across the Tower Bridge Glass Walkway
Through the Tower Bridge Exhibition, I explored the high-level walkways, learned about the engineering, and experienced walking on glass floor.
Entering the Tower Bridge Exhibition
After entering the Exhibition, we started by heading up toward the high-level walkways.
We chose to take the stairs, but there is also an elevator available if you prefer not to climb.
Learning the History of Tower Bridge
Before reaching the glass walkway, you will pass through several exhibits that go deeper into the bridge’s design and construction.

These displays help set the stage for the experience and give helpful context before walking across the Tower Bridge glass walkway.
It made the visit feel more immersive than just stepping onto the glass floor right away.
Walking Across the Tower Bridge Glass Walkway
From there, it was finally time to walk across the glass walkway.
This is completely different from walking across Tower Bridge on the lower level, which is free to do.

Walking across the glass floor places you high above the Thames, offering a clear view straight down through the glass bottom walk beneath your feet.
Being on the high-level walkway feels more like floating above the city than simply crossing a bridge.

Facing the Glass Floor and the Views Below
Normally, I am afraid of heights, so I expected walking on the glass floor to feel intimidating.

Surprisingly, it did not feel scary at all. Instead, it was exciting and honestly pretty incredible.
The Tower Bridge glass floor views from above were some of the best I experienced in London!

Looking straight down through the glass made this part of the Tower Bridge glass walkway experience unforgettable.
