I tried to visit Bathtub Gin a few times over the past year. Once in Los Angeles, which is their other locations, and once in NYC.

Each time, I failed due to not grabbing a reservation and a lack of planning.

I was beyond excited that I was able to get a last-minute reservation last minute at this hidden bar in the Chelsea district of New York City.

So what’s up with the name? Bathtub Gin earned its name during the Prohibition era in the United States (1920-1933) when the production, distribution, and sale of alcoholic beverages were illegal.

Since commercial distilleries were shut down or operating illegally, people began making gin at home.

Bathtubs were often used as large containers where ingredients could be mixed.

How To Find Bathtub Gin?

First, we had to locate the entry point in the Chelsea district of NYC, which was a fake coffee shop with a bouncer standing out front.

Once we walked up, we gave him the name of the reservation, and he let us inside.

We were brought through the curtain as soon as we entered, and we saw the iconic brass bathtub in the middle of the room.

We sat at a comfortable table, and the fun began.

The Cocktails At Bathtub Gin In NYC

Their cocktail menu was creative, featuring a variety of alcohol, and of course, Gin.

Their Gin & Tonic list features spirits from all over the world, including gins from Africa, Japan, Greece, and many more.

I tried the Silver Screen Martini first, which is a strong and silky cocktail, made with vodka, dry vermouth, coconut oil, popcorn, and salt.

It honestly tasted just like a bucket of popcorn, with extra butter, at the movies. It was unique, weird, and truly delicious.

The Martini was paired with the Bayab Orange & Marula Gin from Africa, which was served with London Essence Blood Orange and Elderflower Tonic.

Next round was the Stray Dog Gin from Greece, served with London Essence Blood Orange & Elderflower Tonic. Garnished with star anise and lavender.

I sipped on the Drop A Dime Collins cocktail, which had tequila, Botanical Liqueur, Carrot, Orange, Lemon Myrtle, Turmeric, and Salt.

It was refreshing and interesting and tasted like a high-end juice cleanse, in a good way.

There was not one drink I didn’t like from Bathtub Gin; they were all unique and bizarre, which is exactly what I anticipate from visiting a speakeasy.

How Much Are Drinks At Bathtub Gin In NYC?

The drinks were anywhere from $16-$22, depending on what cocktail you got.

Which is honestly reasonably priced for one of the best speakeasies in New York City.

Other bars we visited during our trip had cocktails around $25 on average, so Bathtub Gin is decently affordable for NYC.

Do I Need Reservations?

Yes, you should make reservations for visiting since they do book out during busy nights. You can still try to visit without one though, just ask the bouncer if they have any availability.
