When I first heard about Maine Seaweed Week, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I knew I had to check it out. With restaurants, breweries, and bakeries all joining in, Seaweed Week promised a full menu of creative dishes highlighting Maine’s incredible seaweed. I set out to taste as much as I could! Here is everything I ate at Maine Seaweed Week.

What is Maine Seaweed Week?

Maine Seaweed Week is a statewide event that celebrates the local seaweed harvest and shines a spotlight on how important seaweed is. Not just for food, but for the environment too.

Held every spring, this unique festival brings chefs, brewers, bakers, and businesses to create seaweed-inspired specials! From weird cocktails to unique dishes.

Nutritional Benefits of Maine Seaweed

Seaweed plays a big role in Maine’s coastal economy and is packed with nutrients. It’s also good for the planet, helping to clean the water and capture carbon.

Seaweed Week is all about showing that this often-overlooked ingredient can be delicious, sustainable, and a big part of our future food system.

Everything I Ate at Maine Seaweed Week

Here is a look at everything I ate and drank at Maine Seaweed Week!

1. Seaweed Cheese

Lakin’s Gorges Cheese from Waldoboro, Maine, had some samples of their seaweed cheese, which was delicious!

We tried this at the festival grounds at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

2. Spring Radish Tartine With Seaweed

We also tried the Spring Radish Tartine at Central Provisions, which had umami butter, Maine wakame seaweed, nigiri vinegar, gochugaru, and levain!

3. Lap Cheong Hot Dog

Also at Central Provisions, we tried the Lap Cheong Hot Dog, which had see chi, kabayaki kewpie, nori furikake, and a potato bun. This was one of my favorite dishes of the day.

4. Thalassa Martini

Next, we headed over to Magissa, a delicious Greek restaurant in Portland.

First, we tried the Thalassa Martini, which had Barrens sugar kelp vodka, Greek gin, bianco vermouth, black pepper, and a lemon twist. It was delicious.

5. Pearl of the Sea

We paired our drink with the Pearl of the Sea at Magissa, which had local dulse, wakame, pearled couscous, and fennel oyster mushrooms.

Everything is always delicious at Magissa and you could tell they put pride into their Maine Seaweed Week dishes.

6. Kettle Cove Martini

Next was a drink at Five of Clubs at the Longfellow Hotel, where they crafted a seaweed martini called Kettle Cove.

This martini had local kombu-infused Bully Boy vodka, brine, and Sichuan pepper.

It tasted just like the ocean, and out of everything we tried that week, this one tasted the most like the sea.

7. FOB Dog

Our last stop was Freeport Oyster Bar in Freeport, Maine.

We came for the FOB Dog, which had kelp relish, red onion, pickled peppers, and kelp aioli.

8. Kelp Margarita

We paired our meal at Freeport Oyster Bar with a Kelp Margarita, which had house kelp tequila, lime, house sour, and kelp powder.

It had a touch of sweetness with the sea.

A Week Full of the Seaweed

And that is everything I ate and drank! We wanted to try more places, but some of the restaurants on the list were not offering their specials yet.

Maybe this weekend I will finish with a Kelp Beer or other snacks. If I do, I will update this post.

From seaweed cocktails to kelp-topped hot dogs, this flavorful adventure showed us just how creative and delicious ocean-inspired dishes can be. Maine knows how to bring the sea to the table.
