Portland has no shortage of incredible seafood restaurants, but Douro in Portland, Maine brings something completely different to the city’s food scene. This coastal Portuguese restaurant combines the flavors of Portugal with fresh ingredients from the Maine coast, and we loved the combination.
Douro in Portland, Maine
Douro is a coastal Portuguese restaurant and wine bar located on Thames Street in Portland, Maine.
The menu takes inspiration from Portugal while highlighting fresh seafood and ingredients from the Maine coast.

That combination immediately stood out to me because it feels so natural. Portugal and Maine both have such a strong connection to the ocean.

And Douro brings those two coastal food cultures together in a really interesting way.
The Atmosphere at Douro
One of the first things I noticed when we walked in was how warm and intimate the restaurant felt.
The space is beautiful without feeling overly formal, which made it perfect for a date night or a nicer dinner in Portland.
It also felt completely different from other restaurants we’ve visited around the city.
Coastal Portuguese Food in Portland, Maine
Of course, the food was the main reason we came.
Douro’s menu combines Portuguese flavors with seafood and ingredients from the Maine coast.

Instead of feeling like another traditional New England seafood restaurant, the dishes have a completely different style and flavor.

We loved getting to experience Maine seafood in a way we hadn’t tried before.
What We Ate at Douro
We ordered several dishes during our visit so we could try a mix of the menu.
I loved the seafood cataplana and the fresh prawns!

Everything we had was delicious, and I really liked being able to share different plates instead of ordering just one entrée.

The menu can change depending on the season and available ingredients, so I would check what’s currently being served before your visit.
Wine at Douro
And obviously, I couldn’t visit a Portuguese restaurant without trying the wine.
Douro has a wine list that fits perfectly with the food, including selections from Portugal and other parts of the region.

If you’re not sure what to order, I would definitely ask for a recommendation to pair with your meal.
For me, seafood and Portuguese wine were the perfect combination.
