If you’re looking for one of the most unique winter activities in New England, this is it! I recently skated the longest ice skating trail in the U.S., and it’s right here in Fairlee, Vermont. Here is a look at my visit!

Lake Morey Ice Skating

If you’ve never heard of it before, Lake Morey Resort is home to the longest outdoor skating trail in the United States.

The 4.5-mile Lake Morey skating loop follows the edge of the frozen lake, so instead of skating in tight circles, you’re gliding along open water with mountains in the distance.

Ice skating at Lake Morey, Vermont, is free and open to the public as long as you bring your own skates.

If you don’t have any, Lake Morey Resort ice skating rentals are available right on site.

Because this is real lake ice, conditions depend entirely on the weather.

My Experience Skating the Lake Morey Loop

I brought my own skates and parked in one of the many parking lots near the lake.

From there, it’s a short walk down to the ice, where there are benches set up so you can lace up your skates and leave your shoes and bags underneath.

Once we were laced up, we made our way onto the Lake Morey skating loop and started gliding along the path.

Gliding across the frozen lake with mountains all around, this is not your typical rink experience.

We ended up skating about halfway around the lake.

The ice was a little scratched up at first, and a lot of people were falling, so you definitely need to take your time.

There were some cracks and rough patches near the beginning, but if you stay steady and go slowly over them, it’s completely manageable.

The further out we skated, the smoother the ice became, which made it much easier to find a rhythm.

What makes ice skating at Lake Morey, Vermont, so different is the scenery.

Skating along the edge of the lake with mountains in the distance and homes lining the shoreline feels peaceful and open.

It doesn’t feel like a rink. It feels like you’re part of the landscape.

This looks incredible! Skating on a frozen lake with mountain views sounds so peaceful and unique, way better than going in circles at a rink.
