Vermont is known for maple syrup, but not everything comes stacked on pancakes. During sugar season, one unexpected snack starts popping up everywhere, including the iconic maple dogs.

Maple Dogs in Vermont

Maple dogs are exactly what they sound like: a classic hot dog with a Vermont twist.

They are often grilled and either infused with maple syrup, topped with a maple glaze, or paired with maple mustard.

Creating that perfect mix of sweet and salty.

You’ll find them at sugar shacks, roadside stands, and maple festivals across the state during sugar season!

When fresh syrup is being made, everything gets a maple upgrade.

The History of Maple Dogs

Maple dogs are not some long-standing historic dish, but they are rooted in Vermont’s deep maple tradition.

As sugar shacks started welcoming more visitors during maple season, many began offering simple, hearty foods alongside syrup tastings.

Hot dogs became an easy go-to, and adding maple was a natural next step.

Over time, maple dogs became a seasonal favorite, giving visitors something warm, savory, and a little unexpected to enjoy while taking in the sugaring process.

Trying Maple Dogs During Vermont’s Sugar Season

After spending the weekend visiting sugar shacks across Vermont, trying a maple dog felt like a must.

Each stop had its own take, but one of my favorite experiences was at Palmer’s Sugar House.

We stopped by for hot dogs and sugar on snow, which is one of those classic Vermont sugar season experiences I’ll be sharing more about in a separate post.

The treat itself was simple but so good, warm, slightly smoky, and finished with just enough sweetness!

It is one of those things that sounds a little strange at first, but once you try it, it just makes sense, especially during Vermont’s sugar season.
