Whether you want to hear it or not, Red’s Eats is the best lobster roll in Maine. It has been a controversial subject for Mainers over the years, but after six months of my lobster roll adventures, Red’s remains at the top of my list. Here is everything you need to know about Red’s Eats, from when they open in 2024 to what you can expect during your visit.
Red’s Eats
First, let me tell you all about Red’s Eats. It is so much more than a tasty lobster shack; it is a historical place loved by many worldwide. Al “Red” Gagnon ran Red’s for more than thirty years.
It was then bought by Allen, who was determined to turn it around.
With the philosophy of “Give people the freshest food… and plenty of it,” he quickly turned this historic place into a destination many would travel to.
I can confirm that Allen lived up to that saying!
Red’s is a family business; almost all of Allen’s grandchildren have worked there.

You can’t miss Red’s Eats as you drive down Route 1 in Wiscasset.
The Red and white awning has become iconic, and the line is always wrapped around the building.
The Waiting Game At Red’s
One of the biggest complaints about Red’s Eats is how long you have to wait.
It is not the workers’ fault, as they get the food out as quickly as they can.
They even start their prep daily during the season at 5:00 AM to keep the line moving as best as possible.
It is simply the demand and popularity of the Reds that makes the line so long.
You can expect to wait anywhere from two to three hours in the summer months. In the early fall, I even waited over an hour.

It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is; everyone always wants Reds.
Both locals and tourists will happily stand in line for this incredible establishment.
It is the only place where I believe the food is worth waiting for.
I am impatient, but I would happily wait three hours for another one of Red’s lobster rolls and plan to do so this upcoming season.
It is the best lobster roll in Maine if not the entire world.
Red’s Eats Lobster Roll
The lobster roll at Red’s is to die for.
Not only is the lobster fresh and caught locally in the area, but they put so much meat in the roll that you can barely even see the bread.
They serve 14.5 tons of fresh lobster meat during their season. That is because they do not measure the lobster meat; instead, they pile it high.

You also receive a side of mayo and the famous Kate’s Butter if you want it!
It’s simple, delicious, and genius to provide the sides to the Lobster. You can then add fries or other seafood options to your order.
How Much Is Red’s Eats Lobster Roll?
Costs constantly change due to fluctuating market prices. This can be from higher fuel costs for boats and market demand.
The few times I have been to Red’s, I have paid between $25 and $35. The price is more than fair, thanks to the amount of lobster meat you get. You can share a roll with someone or even eat one yourself.
Red’s Eats Menu
Red’s Eats offers many other delicious food options, all sourced locally. Allen’s favorite is the hot dog, which is a perfect summer meal!
The Red’s Crabmeat Roll features fresh, local crabmeat tossed in mayonnaise on a buttered, grilled bun.
The Haddock Sandwich is a favorite that can be grilled or deep-fried and served on a buttered, grilled sesame seed bun.
Try their famous onion rings, homemade whoopie pies, and blueberry cake.
Red’s Eats Famous Visitors
Red’s Eats attracts both locals and tourists passing through Maine. The establishment has also had various famous visitors, including Andrew Zimmerman, Martha Stewart, Lionel Richie, and many others.

When Is Red’s Eats Open?
I am happy to report that Red’s Eats is open for its 2025 season! That means it’s time to get in the car and drive over to this Maine favorite!
They are open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
You can check their website for updated hours.
Is Red’s Eats Cash Only?
Yes, the restaurant accepts cash only. Bring more than enough to try various menu items.
You will be happy you did when you get to the front of the line! There is an ATM on the corner if needed.
Does Red’s Eats Have Inside Dining?
There is no inside dining at Red’s Eats since it is a shack. However, there is a beautiful patio where you can enjoy your food.
Many go across the street to the picnic tables by the water, which is the best place to enjoy our food. You can also sit on one of the benches in downtown Wissascet.
Are There Bathrooms At Red’s Eats?
Since it is a small lobster shack, it does not have a bathroom.
But don’t worry; there are multiple portapotties across the street, which you can quickly reach during your visit.
Where Is Red’s Eats?
You will find Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, Maine, right on Route 1.
