Maple season in Vermont is one of the best times of year to visit, when sugar shacks come alive with fresh syrup, pancake breakfasts, and classic local traditions. If you’re wondering which Vermont sugar shacks are actually worth visiting, read on to find my favorite spots.
Vermont Maple Season and Sugar Shacks
If you’ve never experienced maple season in Vermont, it’s such a fun time to visit.
This is when the sap starts flowing, usually in late winter into early spring, and sugar shacks open their doors to visitors.
Sugar shacks, also called sugar houses, are where maple syrup is made.

You’ll often see steam pouring out of the buildings as sap is boiled down into syrup.
And many places turn it into a full experience with pancake breakfasts, maple tastings, and seasonal treats.
It’s not just about the syrup either.
Visiting Vermont sugar shacks feels like stepping into a local tradition, with families gathering, long lines for pancakes, and that warm maple smell in the air everywhere you go.
Best Vermont Sugar Shacks to Visit
Here is a look at all of the Vermont sugar shacks that I visited this Spring!
1. Palmer’s Sugar House
Location: Shelburne, VT
One of my favorite stops during Vermont maple season was Palmer’s Sugar House.
Here we came specifically to try their famous pancake breakfast, served on weekends during sugar season.

The pancakes came with a side of bacon and were completely drenched in fresh maple syrup.
The whole place was buzzing with visitors, there was live music playing, and even goats outside, which just added to the experience.

We also tried their maple dogs here, and these ended up being the best we had during our time in Vermont.
It’s one of those spots that feels like a full maple season experience, not just a quick stop.
2. Silloway Maple
Another stop we made during maple season was Silloway Maple, which had a full open house weekend experience going on when we visited.
We came here specifically for the maple creemee Affogato and to sample their different maple syrups.

You can watch the syrup being made, sample everything from fresh sap to bourbon barrel aged maple syrup.
Of course, we also tried another maple dog here because, at this point, why not?
This one was boiled in sap, which gave it a slightly different flavor, and it was just as fun to try another version at a different sugar shack.

This stop felt a little more hands-on, with tours, samples, and so many maple treats to try!
Making it a great place to really experience Vermont maple season.
3. Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks
Next, we stopped at Morse Farm, where we came specifically for the classic sugar on snow experience.
If you’ve never had sugar on snow, it’s exactly what it sounds like: hot maple syrup is poured directly onto packed snow.
It then instantly cools and thickens into a soft, taffy-like texture.

You roll it up on a stick and eat it fresh, and it’s such a simple but fun tradition that really captures what Vermont maple season is all about.
We also did a full maple syrup tasting here, which was both great and surprisingly educational.

You get to try different grades of syrup and learn how the flavor changes depending on when it’s produced during the season.
To finish it off, we ended with a maple creemee root beer float, which was just as good as it sounds and the perfect sweet ending to the stop.
4. Vermont Maple Outlet
Vermont Maple Outlet is another great stop to add to your maple season itinerary.
Especially if you’re looking to try a little bit of everything.
While it’s not a traditional sugar shack, it offers some of the best maple treats in the area.

From fresh maple syrup and maple candy to sauces and snacks, it’s one of those places where you’ll want to try a little bit of everything.
You also have to try their maple creemee here, it’s one of the best and definitely worth the stop.
5. Palmer Lane Maple
Another great stop for maple creemees is Palmer Lane Maple.
Especially during maple season when they’re serving up some really fun flavors.
We stopped here specifically for the maple creemees, and they did not disappoint.

They offer options like maple peach and maple chocolate, along with classic maple.
So it’s a great place to mix it up a bit if you’ve already had a few traditional ones.
It’s not a full sugar shack experience, but it’s absolutely worth adding to your list if you’re looking for some of the best maple creemees in Vermont.
6. Cold Hollow Cider Mill
While Cold Hollow Cider Mill isn’t a traditional sugar shack, it’s still one of the best stops to add to your Vermont maple season itinerary.
This place is known for its fresh apple cider and famous cider donuts.
But they also have a huge selection of maple products, making it a great place to try even more Vermont favorites all in one spot.

It’s definitely a busier stop, but worth it for the experience alone.
Between the warm cider, fresh donuts, and shelves full of maple everything, it’s one of those places you’ll want to spend some time exploring.
