If you’ve ever seen photos of Norway’s Lofoten Islands, chances are you’ve spotted the iconic red fishermen’s cabins sitting beneath towering mountains. During our trip to Lofoten, we stayed in one of these traditional cabins at Eliassen Rorbuer, and it completely lived up to the hype.
Eliassen Rorbuer in Lofoten
Eliassen Rorbuer is one of the most iconic places to stay in the Lofoten Islands.
The property is known for its traditional red fishermen’s cabins surrounded by some of Norway’s most beautiful scenery.
These cabins, known as rorbuer, were traditionally used by fishermen and are an important part of Lofoten’s history.
Today, many have been transformed into places where travelers can stay and experience a piece of that history for themselves.
We knew we wanted to stay in a traditional rorbu during our trip, and Eliassen Rorbuer was exactly what I had pictured when dreaming about visiting Lofoten.
From the red cabins lining the waterfront to the massive mountains rising behind them.
The entire property looked like something straight off a Norwegian postcard.
Arriving at Eliassen Rorbuer
I was blown away from the moment we arrived.
We had already spent several days exploring Lofoten, but there was something special about finally pulling up to those iconic red cabins we had seen in so many photos before our trip.
The setting alone is incredible.
You’re surrounded by water and dramatic mountains, with rows of red cabins creating one of those scenes that almost doesn’t look real.
Then we walked into our cabin and saw the view.
A huge mountain was right outside our window.
It was one of those moments where I immediately knew we had picked the right place to stay.
Inside Our Traditional Rorbu Cabin
One thing that surprised me was how spacious our cabin was.
When you hear “traditional fisherman’s cabin,” you might picture something small and rustic, but ours had plenty of room to spread out.
We had a separate bedroom, private bathroom, kitchen, and living area.
Having a kitchen was especially convenient during our road trip through Lofoten.
We could keep food and drinks in the cabin and didn’t have to eat every meal at a restaurant.
The separate living area also made the cabin feel more like a little home than a standard hotel room.
It gave us plenty of space to relax after spending our days hiking and exploring the islands.
Waking Up to the Lofoten Mountains
The view was easily one of my favorite things about our stay.
The mountains of Lofoten were right outside our cabin, creating the kind of scenery I had imagined when planning this trip.
You didn’t have to drive anywhere or hike to a viewpoint to enjoy it.
We could simply look outside.
There’s something pretty incredible about waking up, opening the curtains, and seeing one of Lofoten’s dramatic mountains towering in front of you.
And because we visited during the midnight sun, we got to enjoy those views almost around the clock.
Experiencing the Midnight Sun
We visited Lofoten during Norway’s midnight sun, when the sun stays above the horizon late into the night.
That meant the scenery outside our cabin never really disappeared into darkness.
Even late at night, we could still see the mountains, water, and red cabins glowing beneath the Arctic light.
It made staying somewhere this scenic even more special because we had so many hours to enjoy the views.
And if you’re wondering how you’re supposed to sleep when it never gets dark, don’t worry.
Our cabin had blackout curtains!
After several days under the midnight sun, I definitely appreciated being able to make the bedroom dark when it was finally time to sleep.
Walking Along the Waterfront
My favorite part of the property itself was the beautiful wooden walkway and deck that wrapped around the waterfront.
We could walk right along the water with the red cabins on one side and mountains surrounding us.
It was such a peaceful place to slow down and take in where we were.
Honestly, you don’t even need to leave the property to find beautiful photo spots.
Every direction seemed to have another incredible view.
If you’re a photographer or content creator, give yourself some extra time just to walk around. The red rorbuer against the mountains are some of the most recognizable scenes in Lofoten.
Laundry at Eliassen Rorbuer
This might not be the most exciting part of staying in an iconic Norwegian cabin, but halfway through a long trip, it was one of the thingswe appreciated most.
There was laundry available on the property, and we definitely needed it.
We had already spent days hiking and traveling around Norway, so being able to wash our clothes without finding a laundromat made things much easier.
Is Eliassen Rorbuer a Good Base for Exploring Lofoten?
For us, staying here fit perfectly into our trip through the Lofoten Islands.
One thing to remember about Lofoten is that the islands are spread out, so where you stay can make a big difference when planning each day.
Eliassen Rorbuer is a great option if your itinerary includes the Reine and Hamnøy area and the incredible scenery found throughout this part of Lofoten.
We spent our trip hiking, driving between small fishing villages, and exploring the islands, so coming back to a waterfront cabin surrounded by mountains felt like the perfect way to end the day.
